Illinois - it's something like -20 windchill right now here.... I have heaters on the water but don't do other heat for the coop. My husband ran power last year so each coop has a plug for the water heater and a plug for the door. I also used plastic to cover the sides on the run. The chickens seem to mostly prefer the area that's sheltered from the wind.
@Debbi Jesse Definitely, I've noticed my poor roosters have black on their combs from the cold. I've got coveralls and heated gloves, and more... but when it was that cold even taking my gloves off for a second to open a latch made my fingers burn for a while.... Luckily it's gotten at least a little warmer now. We are at 23 right now at 6 am.
One of my coops is easy to clean but the other is the one that I have to stoop over and it's really long so I hate cleaning it. I was paying someone to clean it every two weeks until I swapped to teaching which pays a lot less and my husband complained. So now I've been ignoring it. It's one of the parts of chickens that make me rethink life choices. Right now each time I think about it, it's too cold, too wet, or there are too many other things to get done at the time. I also had a tree fall on a section of my run and need to fix it, but water has gathered on the top and froze, so I can't deal with it until the water is off...
