Freestyle, front crawl & the difference!
Freestyle and front crawl are two terms that are used for the same stroke in swimming. Basically swimming on the front. But why two words for the same thing? This can be confusing but here I share the difference… Freestyle refers to the style a swimmers arms make in the recovery phase of the arm action. Because every body type and swimmer is different, the way in which the arm recovers differs. Some have a straight arm recovery, and some adopt a bent elbow recovery. Some swimmers hands are close to the body while others recover wide. With so many rules and strict regulations around competitive swimming, “freestyle” refers to the free-style of action that is allowed in competition during this phase of the arm action. In swimming front crawl, the arm action has four or five distinct phases. 1, entry. 2, catch. 3, pull/power. 4, exit and 5, recovery. Each phase lasts a fraction of a second but in dividing these up, we can start to notice them. Have a look at the video below to try and figure what I mean. Leave a comment if you have questions.
