@Zach Douglas Great question Zach! Yeah pretty much. The exercise helps reduce extra pushing of air which causes us to then squeeze with extrinsic often times... The reality is that volume will naturally increase as you ascend BUT it's not done through pushing for the volume, it's a byproduct of good function. So when I say the exercise works on reducing volume... I really mean that it's reducing the tendency to PUSH FOR VOLUME. It's just more simple to say it helps reduce volume which can help reduce strain and squeeze. It is possible to sing quietly and still experience unwanted recruitment absolutely... it just makes it a bit harder because squeeze typically is a domino affect of pushing too much air which you are probably not doing if you are singing at a lower volume. But you still could be just squeezing those muscles out of habit. I would work on some hooty heady sounds if you can't reduce that squeeze on this exercise!
