I want to share a personal story!
It happened during Covid. I was trying to learn Eric Clapton's style of soloing. I wanted to be just like him so I went to his roots (BB King, Freddie King) and started studying hard. Well, what do you think happened? I fell in love with the blues world? Actually, no I got really depressed. It felt horrible. I wanted to quit. You see, the problem was that I was learning stuff that didn't really excite me. I wanted to learn Clapton and I was forcing myself to learn other's. I could not sit still and learn the licks, felt always bored and like I had no patience to practice. I was ready to give up the guitar. I found myself talking to myself in the shower. I said to myself - "Hey, you don't have to learn to play, it's not mandatory, you can just have had a phase and that's it". I sat with the idea for a second. water streaming down. And then I said to myself - "Well I still really want to solo". After, for the first time, I heard Stevie Ray's Life Without You. It's the song that showed me a whole new world of blues and inspired me to play and learn. It was like a new fire was set and I have had zero problems since. The moral of this story - there are skills more important than scales or theory. It's knowing yourself, knowing what and why you love something. I hope this helps somebody!
