So glad you touched on how visual schedules help with student anxiety. I think it is easy to forget that kids are not just along for the ride. They like to know what is happening next. Just easing that stress for a child can make a big difference in behavior. I have always used a visual schedule that students manipulate, and have even made smaller versions that individual students who need it can keep in their cubby. I think for this year I will try and add more real photos, I have always wanted to do that but haven’t prioritized it.

Here is an example of how I modified the visual schedule for a student who was having some anxiety about the school day. She was very familiar with our schedule by the time I introduced this “game board” version of our day. She kept it in her cubby and had a Velcro game piece she could move along the board. She loved it and it was so popular that I ended up making copies for the other students.
Favorite summer time activity
It is a hot one here in Seattle today. As we wait for the class to start, let’s get to know each other! Tell us your favorite thing to do in the summer using only a GIF. I’ll start.😆

Welcome to my new school!
Welcome to Musically Minded Academy. The doors are officially open, and I could not be happier that you're here. 🎵 I've spent over 25 years in early childhood classrooms, and the thing I hear most from teachers is some version of "I want to use music with my kids, but I don't know where to start." This is the place I built to answer that. Inside, you'll learn how to bring music into the lives of the young children you teach, and just as importantly, you'll come to understand the brain science behind why it works. When you understand the why, the how gets so much easier, and a whole lot more fun. My mission has always been to take the overwhelm out of teaching and bring the joy back. That's what this community is for. A place to learn ideas that actually work with real kids on real mornings, without adding one more thing to your already full plate. So here's your first step: drop a comment below and introduce yourself. Tell us where you teach and what brought you here. I read every single one, and I can't wait to get to know you. 💛 Let's make some music together. Jocelyn
