History of Peyote Stitch
Later today I will be putting up a new classroom video on Flat Even Count Peyote Stitch. I know content has been slow in coming, it's been one disaster after another around here, but that's neither here nor there. Anyhoo, I decided to post this history of Peyote Stitch because it is quite interesting. Peyote goes back millennia, to Ancient Egypt, in fact some ancient beading was found in the tomb Pharoah Tutankhamun, otherwise known as King Tut. I find it quite amazing that this art form has been passed down though thousands of years over 200 generations of parent or grandparent teaching child. Read on: The peyote stitch is an ancient off-loom bead weaving technique with global roots, though its specific name comes from 19th-century Native American religious practices. - Ancient Origins: The physical technique is thousands of years old and was independently discovered by multiple cultures. Early examples resembling the stitch appear in artifacts from Ancient Egypt, including beadwork found in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. - Worldwide Use: Various indigenous cultures across West Africa, Asia, and the Americas developed the offset weave independently without direct contact. - The Name "Peyote Stitch": The term emerged in the United States during the 19th century. It was named because of its prominent use by members of the Native American Church to decorate ceremonial objects and regalia used in peyote sacrament rituals. - The Name "Gourd Stitch": The technique is also called the gourd stitch because it was traditionally used to adorn gourd containers and rattles. I'd love to hear YOUR thoughts feel free to comment.
