Update to Our Community - whats been going on
Hello all, unfortunately I have not been too active in this Skool group, and that's because we've been making progress in what has become my main priority: Practical Philosophy Club. At the start of this year, we had three groups in Mexico, Spain, and Canada. At a certain point, we felt that expansion was the next way forward, and so have been working on that. Now, we've gone from 3 groups to more than 15 that meet each week. We now have groups in Canada, Spain, Mexico, Bulgaria, Tokyo, Philippines, Vietnam, Germany, France, Iceland, and more! The goal for this is to bring people together to have deep discussions and practice their critical thinking muscles, like Socrates would have done. We've been working diligently on building the systems to help make the experience consistent across countries, and adjusting our messaging to better express what it is we're trying to do. You can see what we've built in terms of our website here: www.practicalphilosophy.club We've been making a lot of progress with streamlining everything and it's thus far been the most rewarding thing I've done in my life, but the cost is I don't really have time to post in this group. Of course, feel free to share any Stoic thoughts and I'll try to answer, but not doing so much in terms of active growth here. If you're interested in attending a Practical Philosophy session, please click here to see if we're in a city near you. If not, feel free to apply to open your own club and if it's a fit, we'll help you get all set-up and bring people together. And finally, you can see at the image below the groups that met last week for our discussion on the topic of 'Relationships and Responsibility' :) Best, Jeff

I used your lessons to expand on my school's Philosophy Club. I made it the third most popular club behind FBLA/Model UN with 60+ members. Additionally, being a high school senior who will soon leave and passed with the mantle of the club leader, aside from leading conversations at least once a week, with my group, this year I planned/led work to create and organize an annual club-led TedX event to elevate student voices. The first event (Feb 7) went fantastic; I can't wait till college to meet new people and create more empowering groups. Really looking forward to spearhead making a new philosophy club/group once in college.

Update: Today, I was accepted to my dream college, Virginia Tech. Wall Street Journal: "Virginia Tech 19th among all U.S. schools," a top 20 US University. I am unbelievably grateful for all my mentors, this opportunity, all the kind people who believed in me, and all the open-minded individuals I ever interacted with who shaped me into becoming an open-minded people, loving person. And this group that also profoundly inspired me to be a better person and uplift others giving voices to those unheard and spreading knowledge.
New Attendance Records at Practical Philosopy Clubs this week
The clubs in Playa del Carmen, Mexico and Hamilton, Canada both hit record attendance last week. Someone broke a table at the Mexican event which I have to pay for, but it's all good lol. We are nearly at the point where we have to start finding bigger venues for both places. At least in Valencia, there is a big park in the summer that we can use. If you'd like to learn how to start a Practical Philosophy club in your area, I'd be happy to help you set that up, and we also built a walkthrough course which you can view in the Classroom section. We are currently working on setting up a website for the organization :)

Incredible stuff!
Whatโ€™s Your favorite Stoic quote? And why
For me itโ€™s this quote from Seneca: โ€œI judge you unfortunate because you have never lived through misfortune. You have passed through life without an opponent โ€“ no one can ever know what you are capable of, not even you.โ€ โ€“ Seneca. A lot of the hardships in life shape you to be the person you are, and what seems like a bad thing often turns out to have been a blessing.

"Discipline is critical, not moderation." BECAUSE IT'S THE FIRST THING TO READ WHEN I OPEN MY MAIN NOTE ON MY NOTES APP! (and I think it's profound, especially concerning my drug-addicted friends)
Quote - Create your own merit
"Never depend on the admiration of others. There is no strength in it. Personal merit cannot be derived from an external source. It is not to be found in your personal associations, nor can it be found in the regard of other people. It is a fact of life that other people, even people who love you, will not necessarily agree with your ideas, understand you, or share your enthusiasms. Grow up! Who cares what other people think about you! Create your own merit." Art of Living, Epictetus

If one's different, one's bound to be lonely, and until one is comfortable with being alone, they'll never know if they're choosing someone out of love or loneliness; the thing is, one cannot be lonely if one likes the person they're alone with. "He who delights in solitude is either a wild beast or a God" (Nietzsche). Being lonely can be a mark of great weakness or great strength. Diving headfirst into solitude can be a massive make or break, but coming into that madness with a mindset explaining " to not care what other people think," one begins to really start living. W Epictetus...

Hello All! I am new to this community and glad to be a part of this amazing group! Something I have been pondering โ€œRegulation first, happiness second!โ€ Thoughts?!

Hey Brenda! Welcome to the community!! (excuse my 10-day late welcome) Anyway... You're pondering an interesting quote, "Regulation first, happiness second!" (For me) Finding the right balance is criticalโ€”regulated actions pave the way for more sustainable happiness, like that of discipline. I believe discipline is essential, being able to force yourself to do something despite how you/I feel, especially to be happy in the long term. For me, discipline is choosing between what I want now and what I want most, but "Too much effort to increase our happiness transforms it into misery" (ROUSSEAU). ITS ALL ABOUT BALENCE!! What's your take on it?
