Guess the HF from its 1 star review...
Even well-loved, super-popular, award-winning books have their serious haters! πŸ˜‚ This is historical fiction. All guesses are encouraged (no googling, though!). This is meant to be fun. Don't be dismayed if you disagree with the review. Any spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors are copied directly from the review. I’ll post the correct answer tomorrow (3rd July 2026). ⭐ Honestly, wtf? I mean, we all know the blind person trope (Daredevil, etc) and the lovable Nazi trope (Hiroshima Mon Amour) and the mystical object searched for by evil Nazis trope (Indiana Jones), so why throw all of these together? The book was readable but no more so than a pulp fiction thriller. Honestly, I don't see this as being Pulitzer quality. The characters were ok, the narration interesting, but a masterpiece? The best US fiction in 2015? Perhaps not. And please don't accuse me of being too harsh - All Quiet on the Western Front, The Winds of War, The Caine Mutiny and The Sympathizer are all better war stories than this one. Might as well give Bob Dylan a Nobel for Literature while you are at it...oh damn, they did! Still not happy with this one. Sorry, but I just cannot appreciate it. I think it was a terrible choice for the Pulitzer, every bit as bad as The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes was for the Booker Prize in 2011. In retrospect, [Author's] 2021 bestseller [Book title] was far, far better than this one, but still suffered from being predictable and having paperthin character development. As for the TV adaptation (1) the author got what he asked for because he was begging for it all through this miserable book and (2) 27% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Nuf said. ⭐ What do you think? What's the book? (In this case, if you can think of only the title, but not the author, that's ok!)

@Zena Ryder It's easily on my all-time favorite HF list. I loved the dual story, the museum setting, the bravery in the face of danger. All the time wondering how these two characters' paths would intersect. And now I want to reread it.
What are you reading this weekend?
Happy Fourth of July to our members in the US! Hopefully, you’ll be able to squeeze some reading in around the festivities. What are you reading? I’m reading our group read, On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton. It’s 1950s historical fiction about a trio of Black singing sisters.

My daughter had to read Yolen 's The Devil's Arithmetic in 8th grade. We were both so touched by it. A gruesome topic, but handled with such grace.

@Zena Ryder If I never made a single dollar off my book but got a comment like that from a reader (especially from a young reader), I'd consider myself arrived.
Where do you go for book reviews?
As book coverage in newspapers wanes, I'm missing good, critical writing about books. I love the Washington Independent Review of Books (for which I sometimes write and edit), and sometimes LitHub is interesting, but I would love to find other places. What are your favorite sites? (Oh, and for community type reviews I like Story Graph, which is like Goodreads but so much better.) https://www.washingtonindependentreviewofbooks.com/ https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/carrie_c

Since 2011, I've discovered so many new favorites by following Nancy Pearl's Book Lust series. Her book The Writer's Library expanded my reading list and prompted numerous discussions about reading, writing, love, art, and other light topics.πŸ™ƒ And I always appreciate a book recommendation from readers in my life. Like being introduced to a new friend.
Which HF books about music have you read?
Our group read is On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton. which is about a trio of singing sisters in 1950s San Francisco. (Our Zoom discussion is on 17th July. See the calendar for details.) Which of these historical novels about music have you read? Would you recommend any? https://www.womansworld.com/entertainment/books/historical-fiction-books-about-music-chart-topping-reads I haven't read any on this list, but one that I loved was Simon the Fiddler by Paulette Jiles

It's not based on a book, but the movie Impromptu is a wonderful portrayal of the unlikely romance between writer George Sand and composer Frederic Chopin.
What was the best book you finished in June?
I finished only 3 in June, when I usually manage 4-6, so I have fewer to choose from and none of them was really anything to write home about, unfortunately. Hopefully July will be better. What about you?

Toast, a memoir by British food writer Nigel Slater. It's also a great movie, with Helena Bonham Carter as the author's stepmother. She might cook better than his mum did, but she ain't Mum.
