The Burning Forest
A massive forest fire is raging in your world. How did it start? Was it natural, accidental, or intentional? Share who, or what is responsible.

I like the idea of a forest that never stops burning 🤔
Prologue to a novel I’m “working” on
Attached is the prologue to a novel I am working on. I haven’t written (creatively) in years. I find myself using what I feel to be too much “concise” language that is unnatural. Our modern world requires one to articulate oneself clearly. Novels, in my estimation, exist to escape from our world. As such I am consistently second guessing my writing as I work through this novel. I read novels, but is my writing too… sterile? As I attempt to “contaminate” it with prose, I wonder if I am actually painting a picture, or just muddying my ideas with excessive character count? I know my formatting is f*cked. It’s my first creative writing project in years. It will take me time to figure that out. But I ask, how does it read? Can you see it? Let me know. -J.R. *Note* The web preview (at least on tablet) does not contain the entirety of the passage. You may have to download it to read it all.

@Fox Thorne Thank you for all the feedback! There are definitely some things there I haven’t thought of. This was helpful. Your questions section was perfect. Some of those unanswered questions are intentional and as such helped me to know that I was accomplishing objectives with this section. Some of the other critiques illuminated areas I hadn’t thought of, or did not flesh out entirely (when perhaps I meant to.) I do apologize for the formatting. I’m not sure what I did but when I exported a PDF it squashed my formatting. I appreciate the effort you put into this. I think this group is definitely going to be helpful 👍
{Nortia} Lightlice
Lightlice are members of the rodentia family, living exclusively on the southwestern edges of Nortia. They have adapted to the expansive cave systems, being quite small and nimble. Their name comes from them usually being viewed as pests and the crystals that protrude out of their backs. These crystals can vary in colour, usually a yellowish-green or a light blue. Lightlice crystals are components in alchemy and magic. Female lightlice do not have these crystals, and are larger than the males. They keep to the dark and are highly aggressive. It's advised to keep your distance from large lightlice that have no crystal protrusions. Male lightlice are small, along with the additions of the crystals that are highly sought after. They are docile and make for better pets. Males will try to impress the females with their singing abilities. Sometimes, males will come together and form a 'band'. If the female is impressed with the performance, the lead will leave to mate. Lightlice have been hunted for their magical components, pushing them deeper into the caves and out of more populated areas. They can be kept as exotic pets, usually only for mages and alchemists, for their crystals do eventually regrow. All in all, they're just silly little guys. :)

Very cool But the real question is… do the back up singer Lightlice know that they are the “backup” or do they think they are the stars? 🤔 Great concept!

J.R. Here, Just started creative writing again after some years of nonfiction writing (in various capacities.) Inspiration is a difficult topic because my taste is all over the place. But as far as writing, for writings sake alone, I’m an Edward Abbey fan. That may seem like a weird inspo but it is what it is… As far as my current project… I guess it’s grimdark? It’s complicated. When I read fantasy novels I tend towards Mark Lawrence, Micheal Fletchers, Abercrombie, etc. I suppose thats what my current project is aiming at in terms of tone. I am finding that I struggle to write “artistically.” I know that I am capable of it… but all too frequently I find myself using unnatural language to describe what I am trying to convey in my novel. That is mostly, why I am here. I need a sounding board for my chapters. I need a group to read what I write and tell me when my project sounds more like an email than a novel. Thanks for having me 🤙
What mediums are people here using?
I was curious what artistic medium people here were conveying their worlds in? I personally I've been creating worlds and stories in my head since I can remember but I've never really found a way to get them out of my head. At the moment I'm giving writing a go and working on Helm Knights (I may change the name later). How is everyone else sharing their worlds or are other people also struggling to find a medium that works for them?

@Rozo Last Name I was going to recommend obsidian. Especially if this is purely world building rather than story telling. Obsidian and/or notion will let you build a “wiki” if you will.
