Competition…”just fold it in”
Tonight I was overseeing a session and helping provide some thoughts on improving the dynamic for the team. I noticed that there was no built in competitive element to the drill. So, i posed the question to the coach…”What would it look like if you added a natural element of competition to this rondo?” I think it is so important that we consider adding competitive elements to as many drills as possible so that players learn not to be complacent and also develop a bit more of a “tough skin” around losing. I am wondering how you all feel about embedding competition into everyday activities. Not just in training environments, but also just in regular scenarios. Like, who can find the most matching pairs of socks in this laundry pile…?

For most my life that is how my relationship with my older brother has been. Being the youngest of 9 kids there was always a natural competitiveness to everything. In my opinion it helped each one of us grow to understand what it’s like to lose and to recognize there’s nothing wrong with that. Competition on the field I feel does the same thing, so I’m always for it at any level.
How do you celebrate your wins…BIG or small
This weekend I celebrated my daughter’s 4th birthday, Independence Day and my Grandmothers 93rd birthday. I found myself asking a question about ritualistic celebrations like these. Why are there not more ritualistic celebrations for small wins in an athletes career and how would it shape their mindset if they had them. I’m curious how you all celebrated the holiday weekend if it applies to you and where you stand on creating rituals to celebrate athlete wins.

I celebrated this holiday by spending some quality time with my family and many of my nieces and nephews. As for the rituals on small wins, I find that when the result is hyper focused it is hard to see growth in the small things. I personally find it very difficult to celebrate any small win, because it my mind the small wins are the “expectation” rather than something I should be proud of.
Hello out there…
Sorry for being MIA for the past few weeks. I have been taking some time to really focus on the students, athletes, families and people closest to me as we head into summer. It has allowed me time and space to find some clarity on my path forward here with NOGA FC. Thank you all for hanging around. I promise there is some cool stuff to come in the next few weeks. I have one big question for anyone still listening here: What was the most impactful experience you can recall from your childhood that shaped the way you talk to young people today???

For me, it was when I first starting going to school at 13, I learned I knew so much more than most other people my age and had a much different attitude and demeanor than anyone else. I learned in that time that to effectively communicate with other people, I need to speak their language, use their passions, verbiage, and word selection so that they can better understand what I am trying to say and why I’m trying to say it. It’s not always easy but it definitely helps build relationships with much more strength.
⏰ Where do you find the time…?
Lately I have been scheduling every single minute of my day. Insane but very helpful in finding lost time. How do you all find the extra minutes you need to get stuff done? I find the hardest part is that I either have to steal them from myself, my wife or my kids. And that means that one of us is getting neglected to make progress in this community and the tools I am trying to build for parents. I appreciate everyone in here for being an early part of this. I promise you it is a slow build but it is for sure building… Share your time based hardships below if you want. I’d love to not feel like the only one who wishes he could add a few more hours to the clock every day. I also through a silly poll in this one.

Reflection Time
I have been thinking a lot this week about the role that reflection plays in my main career as an educator and wondering how all of you are utilizing this tool in your day to day lives. Is it a daily, weekly or monthly practice for you? Do you do it at all? Do you do it too much and its slowing down your progress? Leave a note here and lets hear how reflection is working, or not working, for you...

While in season I did it daily to keep track of progress, but since I have been injured it has become closer to once a day.
