Haters Gonna Hate, Hate, Hate
This podcast is certified fresh, freshmediaworks.com. Hey everybody. Welcome back to The Marketing Drive. I'm Chris Doelle, and this is the show where I use my commute to talk about one actionable marketing idea, one tip, one trick, one tidbit to help you do better, make more money, and get more customers. Today, I hate to do this because I'm not a fan of Taylor Swift, but I'm titling this one: 'Haters Gonna Hate.' What do you do when you have haters? When you have a social media channel, a YouTube channel, a podcast, or content, how do you handle haters? First, don't let them bother you. I know it's easier said than done, but let’s talk about YouTube. Start by establishing clear community guidelines. Use the settings to spell out what you will and won't accept. Establishing these will curtail some of the negativity. Probably the most important thing, and this applies to YouTube, Facebook communities, posts, podcasts, or anything else: remove hateful comments. Delete them, block them, and move on. I know some think, "That'll hurt my engagement. I need comments and interaction." It's not worth it. Get rid of it. If a comment isn't overtly rude, leave it and engage positively. But if it's purely hateful, report it, delete it, and move on. Avoid back-and-forth with haters. One, it increases the chance you'll say something you'll regret. Two, it’s a downer for your audience. So remove the negativity. Don't worry about it. Move forward. Some say, "The first time I got a hater, I took it as a sign of success." Yes, it stings for a minute, but those are internet trolls. They feel better by saying negative things. Don't fall into the trap. Giving them attention takes it away from your supporters. Engage fully with your supporters. When someone likes or says, "Good job," engage back. Say, "Thank you so much," and ask what they liked. Get that conversation going. At the end of the day, haters gonna hate. Don't give them a platform. De-platform them, move on, and celebrate your successes. Do not let haters curtail your content creation. Keep creating. You don’t need to interact with idiots.
