Ready to Copyright Your Book? (US TIPS)
📚 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? You’ve put time and creativity into your book—so let’s talk about protecting your work! In the U.S., copyright generally exists automatically once your original writing is saved or written down. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀. Here’s how to get started: ✅ 𝟭. 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 Go to copyright.gov/registration and follow the registration option for 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀, which includes fiction and nonfiction books. ✅ 𝟮. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 You’ll provide information such as your book’s title, author, copyright owner, and whether it has been published. If published, have your first publication date ready. ✅ 𝟯. 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗲𝗲 Current online fees are $𝟰𝟱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 or $𝟲𝟱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The $45 option has specific requirements, including one work, one individual author who owns the copyright, and no work made for hire. ✅ 𝟰. 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 This is called the “deposit.” Depending on your book’s publication status and format, you may upload a digital file or need to mail physical copies. Follow the instructions for your situation. ✅ 𝟱. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 The Copyright Office reviews your application and may contact you with questions, so keep an eye on your email. 💡 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Registering before infringement occurs—or within three months after first publication—can help preserve eligibility for statutory damages and attorney’s fees if infringement happens. You can still register an older book. 🤖 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗜-𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? Copyright protects qualifying human-authored contributions. AI-generated material that is more than minimal must be disclosed and excluded from the claim using the Standard Application. A book containing AI material may still have protectable human contributions. 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁!

Great reminder that copyright exists automatically but registration adds extra protection. Thanks for sharing the US tips, Krista! 📚
Bookish Art 👻📚
No one warned me how easy it is to spend money on arts and crafts 🤣 But seriously though how cute these these little bookish inspired pieces of art turn out!?! This was my first time trying, and I have pretty poor artistic skills but I am overall happy with the results maybe I should work on improving this craft because it's so cute. I made this with Shrink Paper and acrylic markers. Not sure what I will be doing with them just yet but wanted to share incase anyone else was feeling inspired!

Ha, the art and craft spending is dangerous Krista! What's the latest thing you couldn't resist?
📉 My Audible sales have dropped
For a long time, Audible was bringing in the most money in my publishing business. My KDP books were profitable, but I was paying for ads to keep them visible and compete with other titles. Those ads also helped people discover my books and choose the audiobook version. Audible benefited without me running separate audiobook ads. Recently, my audiobook sales have dropped by about half. 🎧 That slowdown has happened alongside changes from Amazon and Audible, including audiobook advertising. I can’t say ads are the only reason for the decline, but they’ve changed the competitive landscape. Other authors now have another way to get their audiobooks in front of potential buyers. I haven’t started running audiobook ads yet, so that’s something I’m evaluating as I decide what to do next. ⚖️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. An author using audiobook ads might be growing their sales, while someone who relied on organic discovery might be seeing a slowdown. Our catalogs, expenses, audiences, and strategies are different. Success isn’t one size fits all. I’m sharing this because I want you to see both sides of building a publishing business. Having success doesn’t mean every income stream keeps growing or that a strategy works forever. 📊 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿, 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Watch your sales, understand your expenses, and evaluate whether a new strategy actually improves your profit. You don’t have to jump on every update—but you do need to pay attention when the numbers change. 💬 Have you noticed any changes in your book or audiobook sales lately?

Sorry to hear the Audible dip Krista, that's frustrating. Have you noticed whether it's the same across your whole catalogue or just a few titles?
