@Cj Monsen I will also add, that if you get a late bid, just say: wait a minute, we are here to raise money and normally a sold is a sold, but tonight it is about raising the most money we can. I am going to take that bid and continue on. Be sure you do this in a fun a loving way not to upset anyone. Also do what Bobby suggested and make sure you give them some time. A lot of what we do is reading the audience and knowing when it is time. This weekend I was done at $7,000 , but then managed to get it going again and taking it up to $8,000. Benefit auctions are way different than traditional auctions. The audience is not trained in how this works and they are bidding off of emotions. You will get better at this and it is great that you are even aware of this. Keep going, and each event you get that much better.
