The Void - Pure Lovecraftian Nightmare Fuel
Hey cosmic horror fanatics! Just rewatched The Void (2016) I almost forgot how weird it is. This Canadian indie gem is hands down one of my favorites! Even though it looks a little old already (yup almost 10 years). For the ones who didn't watch it yet, here is a small plot: a small group of people trapped in a hospital, surrounded by mysterious hooded cultists (because why not), while reality itself starts breaking down around them. What starts as a siege thriller quickly descends into pure cosmic madness. Why this movie is cosmic horror perfection for me: - Body horror on the dot (You will like if you enjoyed The Substance) - Interdimensional beings that are genuinely incomprehensible and terrifying - Practical effects that are both disgusting and beautiful - That creeping dread of ancient forces beyond human understanding - A finale that goes full eldritch nightmare Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie clearly understand what makes cosmic horror work - it's not just about tentacles and madness, it's about that overwhelming sense that we're insignificant specks in a universe full of things we were never meant to understand. When I watched it the first time I didn't know about the genre, but now that I'm trying to understand it better, I like it so much more! Anyone else brave enough to dive into The Void? What did you think of those mind-bending final scenes? (Tag spoilers if you want to talk about it)

This movie starts off looking fairly predictable, but takes increasingly wild and unexpected turns. For a while it seems the screenplay writers lost control of the entire plot, but I think it does a good job of finishing with a solid cosmic horror conclusion. An essential part of cosmic horror is not being able to know exactly what's going on and why.

I was raised on classic literature, and read fantasy, sci-fi, Gothic horror, and antiquarian horror, before discovering Lovecraft and cosmic horror. I'm a technical writer, English tutor (especially in English literature), and amateur photographer. One of my hobbies is Historical European Martial Arts; the photo here is of me in my fifteenth century harness. I'm a strong fan of Lovecraft while acknowledging his personal and literary flaws, though I do enjoy some of the stories from the broader Lovecraft Circle. I enjoy listening to the YouTuber Horror Babble, who narrates classic and modern horror stories, including many of Lovecraft's.

@Matt Burns yeah that's me in my custom made armor. Most of it is titanium to reduce weight and avoid rust. I haven't worn it out on the street or anything, it's a bit confronting and I'd prefer to be with other people so onlookers understand what's going on.
How did you discover HP Lovecraft?
For me it was sitting around a table with my friends about 25 years ago. My buddy had tried Dungeons and Dragons and found an even more interesting game to play - The Call of Cthulhu. After finishing our first round that evening I was so fascinated I asked what it was all about. Another friend had a copy of Rats in the Walls and read it to us. I was so creeped out that when my mom came to pick me up the next day, we went to the bookstore and I immediately went and picked up a few different books. Good times. 😂 How’d you first discover the works of HP Lovecraft?
