How would you make $100 from your newsletter
I had the Monetization Q&A this morning. It was a small group (3 people aside from me) so we had fun just casually chatting, bouncing off ideas, and then sharing our mutual dislike of Substack (or rather the people who run it). In any case, @Megan Justice, who is happy with her tax filing business, but also has a newsletter on the side for people who are interested in learning about Megan's work, mentioned she'd like to make at least $100 consistently from her newsletter. This was humbling and reminded me of a book I read recently by Travis Sago, Fans & Fortunes Formula. In it, Travis reminds us that while we, the expert business owners, often look at the bigger picture (how to make six figures), our audience isn't necessarily there. Like Megan... she's not trying to make a six-figure blogging business. She already has a successful business that keeps her busy... but she also enjoys having her newsletter on the side, and thinks it would be nice to make some money off it. So... my question to all of you: How would you make $100 consistently (say every week) from a small newsletter? I have my ideas that I shared with Megan, but I'd love to crowdsource a few if you have thoughts?

Guest Posting: Good or Bad?
After a very, very long time, I published a guest post on The Side Blogger. This whole thing came about in a weird turn of events: Lib (the person who wrote it), made a LinkedIn post asking if anyone would like a high-quality guest post. I didn't know Lib at the time, but I saw @Lex Roman jump in the comments and go all "me me me." And because I trust Lex and know they've been publishing guest posts on their site Revenue Rulebreaker for some time (I was the first to publish one on Revenue Rulebreaker, in fact), I also went me me me... Anyway, the point is, I'm happy with how this turned out. And I would like to do more of these. However, I've tried to make it work in the past, but it failed miserably. Not everyone turned in quality work, and it ended up being more work than what I signed up for. So I'm understandably a little concerned. I was also paying a fixed amount for articles, and that attracted all sorts of wrong-fit people. So, now I'm wondering how to make it worthwhile for both parties. One option would be to pay them a fixed amount as I did before, and the other would be to do a JV-style thing where I promote them to my list in exchange for a quality article. Anyway... lotsa thoughts around this. I guess my question is... has anyone here accepted or contributed to another website? Was it worthwhile? And what would be your ideal form of compensation? A fixed payment or a JV style thing?

I just did a guest post on two separate pubs (both on Substack, but one was a repost from the publication on Medium that was also on 'stack). My views and read went way up.

@Maliha M no it was just internal. Opening up to a larger base.
What's your bottleneck?
The day before yesterday (I think), I asked what's stopping you from unlocking your next income goal. I have a few answers. But let's get deeper today. Which of these do you resonate with the most?

@Maliha M Yup… I also have my own websites, but after a year of zero growth I gave up on them (for now). I don't really 'sell' anything, so I felt it made more sense to use the infrastructure of Medium (for articles) and Substack (I have three separate pubs there) for the fiction, the wellness, and the Florida pieces." The fiction has certainly underperformed against the wellness items.

@Maliha M my book (it’s wellness related) comes out in a few weeks, so I will have a product at that point.
Medium has a notetaking app now!!!
Someone in a different community just sent me an invitation to Medium's shiny-new notetaking app... no idea what the purpose of this app is... it looks like early-day Evernote... Here's a video in case anyone's interested... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70Iv1eiCEXA

@Maliha M when I first saw it I thought they were trying to copy Substack Notes feature. What it seems to be is an internal writing tool that you can do everything within Medium. Maybe?

@Maliha M reread your last sentence;-)
Do you have a media business or an education business?
Writers/content creators... What kind of business do you have or would you like to have? I think there are primarily two types of content-based businesses (maybe 3, if you combine #1 and #2 into a third category of its own). 1. Media business: Curated content, original reporting or research, entertainment, infotainment 2. Education business: Based around teaching And then there's the third kind where you mix both. I think of The Side Blogger as an education hub... it fits because I sell courses and memberships focused on helping folks master skills. But I find the idea of owning a media business intriguing, and can't stop thinking about incorporating that into The Side Blogger... somehow. So yeah, anyway, I'm rambling. Tell me about your business. Would you say it's primarily a media business, an education business, or a mix? Oh, and sorry for the creepy photo...

I am not sure what I do is even a "business". I write health and wellness articles as a Certified Wellness Coach (mostly on Medium), but I also write fiction that mostly post on Substack. The book I have coming out next month is a Health and Wellness book. I expect to be a millionaire by this time next month.
