Italy is my Travel & Trail Tuesday
As a teen, I had the chance to travel with my extended family to Italy to visit our relatives for a month. We spent time in Rome and Naples, and as a kid whose Mom was interested in history, we did all the major sightseeing. Visiting the little town where most of my grandfather's family still lived was both incredibly eye-opening and boring. Very small, narrow streets that, if a car was coming, you stopped and pressed yourself against the wall of a building. In fact, to me, the archways in the homes seemed bigger than the roadways. Looking back now, after almost 50 years, I really appreciated the relaxed lifestyle everyone lived. The people we were around were all 70-90 years old and active. Some of the images in my head of Pompeii can still bring a tear to my eye. The Colosseum was so impressive because, standing there, and after being in an NFL stadium, I was amazed at how they engineered this place. Side note, we got an unofficial tour of a few places we weren't supposed to see often. Not sure who my uncle was connected with, but I saw parts of the Vatican were locked down and guarded.
