🎬 Welcome to The Film Mom Collective!
🎬 Welcome to The Film Mom Collective! Hi everyone! I’m Jessica — mom, costume designer, and professor — and I created this space to connect, support, and empower moms in film & media. This is your community to: - Share resources and on-set hacks - Network with other moms in the industry - Get career advice and mentorship - Access the job share database, workshops, guides, and checklists To kick things off, introduce yourself in the comments: - Your role in film or media - How many kids you have - One motherhood hack that keeps you sane on set I can’t wait to get to know each of you and start building this community together! 💖
I’m a costume designer, and I have two children. One motherhood hack that keeps me sane on set is establishing upfront any important days I’ll have covered due to family commitments. It’s a risk, but it eases the anxiety of trying to figure out how to ask for the morning off for something like a school play once the job has started, without it coming across as unprofessional. Just like we disclose holidays at the beginning of a job, let’s normalize sharing family commitments from day one.
🎬 Let’s Talk Industry Change
🎬 Let’s Talk Industry Change Moms in film — if you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be and why? - Longer shoots? Flexible schedules? On-set childcare? Networking support? - Wage gaps? Access to mentorship? Representation in leadership? This is your space to voice the challenges, brainstorm solutions, and support each other. Comment below and let’s start building a roadmap for a film industry that works for mothers. 💡 Bonus: Your insights could shape future workshops, advocacy campaigns, and practical resources in the community!

I’m breaking my own rules here 😅! If I could change three things about the industry for mothers, it would be to make: 1. Maternity pay standard for freelance and permanent roles. 2. On-set childcare available, so parents don’t have to choose between work and family. 3. Job share a regular option, allowing parents to take gigs without worrying about coverage.
🎬 Emergency Childcare Hacks for Moms in Film
🎬 Emergency Childcare Hacks for Moms in Film Moms in film, we know the struggle: long hours, unpredictable shoots, and babysitters falling through. Here’s how you can build a backup plan and stay on set without the stress: 1. Build Your Support Network - Family (duh): Grandparents, siblings, or trusted relatives who can step in. - Friends: Build your network of film moms—let’s create a circle of help and support. Hint, hint 😉 - Agency: Professional, vetted childcare agencies that offer last-minute coverage. 2. Advocate for On-Set Childcare - Push for on-set crèches or nannies — this is a growing conversation in the U.K. and we’ll cover how to make it a reality soon. - Pairing your child at work with professional care is the ideal solution where possible. 3. Flexible Solutions - Job Share: Split shifts with another parent on set. - Bring Your Child to Work: For roles where it’s feasible, normalize this with paired childcare support. - Au Pair: Consider short-term or temporary au pairs who can be on-call for shoots. 💡 Engagement: Let’s build the ultimate backup playbook together! Share your top emergency childcare hacks, apps, or creative solutions in the comments so other moms can benefit.

🎬 What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Mom in This Industry
🎬 What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Mom in This Industry I wish someone had told me this earlier. If you’re a mom in film & media — or thinking about becoming one — what’s one thing you wish you’d known before motherhood and this career collided? It could be about: - hours and energy - money and trade-offs - childcare realities - boundaries on set - career momentum - guilt (or the lack of it) - what actually matters in the long run No advice columns. No fixing. Just real experiences that might help another mom feel less alone — or more prepared. I’ll start in the comments. 💬👇

I wish I’d known that this industry isn’t designed with mothers in mind, and that struggling doesn’t mean you’re failing. I wish I’d understood earlier that long hours and unpredictability aren’t just “part of the job” — they come with real costs, especially when you have children. No one prepares you for the emotional load of missing moments while still needing the work because the money is good. I also wish I’d known how powerful community would be. Other moms in this industry aren’t competition — they’re your lifeline. Shared childcare ideas, job sharing, honest conversations, and support make staying in this industry possible. And finally, I wish I’d known it was okay to advocate for myself earlier — for flexibility, for support, for boundaries — without feeling like I had to apologise for being a mother.
