Brand new to equines. Adopted Bettsy (27) and Leona (22) on 11/1/2025. Had the vet out to give them a once over and she said she would not refer me to a farrier until my donkeys behaved better (Leona was doing a little bit of kicking and reared up at one point during the visit). They have free range of 28 acres of rocky, Texas hill country land, but they are in need of a trim. I’m going to have to take them to the vet so their farrier can trim them, but my hope is that one day I’ll get them to the point where I can do the work myself so I don’t have to put them through the stress of travel. I wish my schedule would allow me to work with them every day, but since I work full time, it has been a challenge.😕
My two standards, adopted from Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue in Texas on 11/1/2025. Bettsy is supposed to be 27 - she’s on the left. Leona (the brown one) is 22 according to her records. I don’t get nearly enough time to spend with them! They have the run of about 28 acres in Fredericksburg, TX. 😊
I’ve got two standard sized donkeys. We’re making a little progress on picking up feet (technically they already know how to do this - they just don’t like to do it for me yet). I was so excited a couple weeks ago when I was able to pick up both front feet on one of my donkeys and actually pick them out a bit. Back feet are a whole different issue though. When they start jerking their legs around, I have a hard time holding onto the hoof which makes it difficult to put it down gracefully. I’m generally working with them by myself. Any tips for keeping a good grasp on their feet? I do try to stand as close as possible to them when working with their feet.
