🧠 Welcome Cliff Butler — our new Ask an Expert partner
We are excited to introduce @cliff-butler-1376 an osteopath and Director of the Melbourne Headache and Concussion Group, to Sideline Parents. Cliff has spent 24 years in clinical practice and now runs Williamstown Health + Lifestyle, a multidisciplinary clinic, alongside his concussion-specialist work. Cliff's focus: - Early assessment and screening after a head knock, including objective balance and graded exertion testing - Structured return-to-play progressions built on AFL and Australian Institute of Sport frameworks - Longer rehab programs for athletes still dealing with symptoms weeks or months later - Working alongside GPs through medical clearance, providing test results and written reports to support that process, not bypass it - Preseason baseline testing with local sporting clubs, so if a player is concussed in-season there's objective data to compare against instead of relying on symptoms alone Cliff also hosts 'The Knock On Effect' podcast, talking with athletes, clinicians, and researchers about brain injury and recovery. Cliff has just posted about the AFL's new 2027 contact-training limits and why the rule change is really about cumulative sub-concussive impact, not just diagnosed concussions, a good example of the kind of research-based thinking he'll bring here: Instagram • Messages Cliff will be joining the community as part of the AMA, so please drop your questions on assessment, return-to-play, or youth head-injury research below and he'll answer all the questions the best he can.

Hello, I've heard about the research with red light therapy on college football players. My son is a Junior now, plays quick tackle on the O-line. He's had no problems this or last season, but when he was a freshman, he had one confirmed & a 2nd possible concussion (the 2nd we didn't know about). He's recently started using our red light on his head in the evenings. It's not the expensive Vielight like they used in the research. What are your thoughts on home red light use and brain inflammation? Thank you so much!
