Why Use AI for Course Development?
I know there's a lot of controversy out there about using AI for course development, and both sides have their points. The biggest concern I've seen out there is regarding "AI 'slop'," and the people expressing those concerns aren't wrong. There's a lot of slop out there. As an instructional designer, it's my job to make sure that I'm not producing slop. Everything I publish has my name on it, whether the learner sees it or not. My manager sees it. My team sees it. I see it. I am accountable for everything that I produce, whether I produce it all myself or with the help of AI. So let me share a bit of my process — which is still evolving as I learn and experience more every day. Right now, my solid go-to is building with Articulate Rise with a heavy lean into code blocks to build reflection blocks that collect responses from the learner, track them, and provide a printout option at the end of the course. I've also used code blocks to create highly interactive blocks that display and compare information using filters, enable calculations and experimentation with numbers, and enable practice scenarios. I'm also experimenting with using Claude Design to produce click-through interactive eLearning with the same block options mentioned above. Claude will publish in SCORM compliant format or html if I want a standalone version. In both cases, I've been using ChatGPT to create my images. And I love Articulate Rise and the code blocks, but there's definitely something attractive about Claude Design in that I can restructure and make sweeping updates quickly and easily; no drag and drop required. I now have (mostly) the ability to bring the vision I have for my course to reality, where without AI, I'm limited to what I can code and what my budget allows for stock images or artwork. The assumption out there, though, seems to be that this means I can just churn out lots of content in a short period of time. The truth is, not if I want quality work and take my accountability seriously.

Welcome to Instructional Design Insiders!
This is a community of practice for Instructional Designers. Whether you're new to the instructional design, or you've been practicing in the field for longer than you'd like to disclose, I hope you'll find something useful here. As a community of practice, I invite you to come here to ask questions, share your knowledge, ask for a brainstorm, bring new tools and frameworks to light. This is your space. I'll be sharing some of my own tools and helping you work through existing tools and navigating the new world of AI. The first course in the Classroom highlights my AI Partner Framework - a tool to help you determine when you should leverage AI for a task, whether it's one you should take on yourself, or if it a collaborative effort. Just click the Classroom tab from the home screen to access the material. But before you head over there - please leave a brief introduction in the comments below, so that we can learn more about each other!

Hi everyone! I'm Jennifer Gildea, your host. I've got more than 30 years of learning & development and instructional design experience, having worked in both IT Training and HR L&D. As a learning professional, I have expertise in instructional design, learning systems management & strategy, and facilitation. I've also worked with help desks and IT, which has added some change management and customer support skills to my resume. I'm passionate about helping people to be successful at what they do. So much so that I've created another Skool community (Level Up Life Skills) to help people of all ages learn things they may not learn in school (financial literacy, career readiness, AI, parenting, home maintenance, etc.). When it comes to instructional design - AI is changing everything. Regardless of how you feel about AI, I'm certain it's a bell we can't unring and it's here to stay. So I'm advocating for the human as an irreplaceable asset and AI as a tool that we use to get the job done. Throughout my career, I have struggled with clients who don't understand the role and are looking for an order-taker as opposed to a problem-solving partner. I crave access to data to help identify where the gaps are and to show if what we're putting out there is working. I look forward to learning more about you!
