You Don’t Need More Time for Self-Care
One thing I notice often in our community is this thought: “I want to do DIY beauty and self-care… but I’m just too busy.” Here’s a gentle reframe: You don’t need more time. You need one protected pocket. For me, Friday night is my self-care pocket. Most weeks, I spend less than 15 minutes doing one small thing: - mixing a lip gloss - making a simple face cream - applying a clay mask - or simply resting with a familiar routine Not perfect. Not aesthetic.Just consistent. DIY beauty doesn’t need hours. It works best as micro self-care - small, repeatable, and kind to real life. If this resonates, start here, this is how to apply the Atomic Habits approach: - Pick one day this week - Set aside 15 minutes - Make one simple product or do one calming ritual That’s enough. Small actions, done consistently, create the biggest shifts. Slow. Simple. Sustainable. What’s one 15-minute self-care or DIY beauty ritual you can commit to this coming week? Share it in the comments 👇 P.S.: I shared a deeper reflection on how I manage time, energy, and self-care using simple containers in my January Substack post. If you enjoy longer-form writing and gentle frameworks, you might enjoy it there:👉 https://open.substack.com/pub/jennajolysa/p/how-i-fit-diy-beauty-and-self-care?r=4s560y&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true P.P.S.: This Kissable Fruity Lip Gloss you see in the video was made during my Friday night self-care pocket in less than 15 minutes, no rush, just a simple rhythm. :)

You Don’t Need More Time for Self-Care
Ingredient Myth Buster
“Natural” doesn’t always mean “safe for everyone.” For example: • Essential oils are natural, but overuse can irritate or damage the skin barrier • Coconut oil works for some, but can be comedogenic or feel drying for others • Fresh aloe vera gel is soothing, but spoils quickly and may cause reactions which is why preserved aloe vera gel is usually safer for regular DIY skincare use 👉 What makes a product skin-friendly isn’t whether it’s “fresh” or “natural” It’s about formulation, stability, and skin condition. In DIY beauty, less is more: - Short ingredient lists - Gentle, well-balanced formulas - Ingredients chosen with intention, not trends😉 It’s always good to practice a skin patch test before using any new ingredient or product, even if it’s natural, to ensure your skin isn’t allergic or sensitive to it. 💁‍♀️Which ingredient have you been most cautious with?

@Melissa Guilliani You’re right to be cautious with essential oils. To stay safe, we can follow these four principles when using essential oils in natural skincare formulation: 1) Always dilute essential oils. Never apply them neat (directly) onto the skin because they are highly concentrated. 2)Less is more. Use essential oils at no more than 2% in your skincare formulations. 3)For babies, only use essential oils for those aged 6 months and above, and always choose gentle oils. 4)Avoid photosensitive essential oils in leave-on products (such as creams, lotions, and lip products). Examples include bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, and bitter orange, as they can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.

@Cheryl Chin Oh, you mean if someone is allergic to fresh aloe vera? In that case, you can use preserved aloe vera gel instead. If you’re still sensitive to the preserved aloe vera gel, you can simply replace it with cucumber extract, it’s also very soothing for the skin.
A Gentle DIY Moment from My December
Today I’m sharing a DIY project I worked on recently 😍 This was specially customised for a 6-month-old baby to help relieve and manage eczema using gentle, natural options. I created a simple combo of Skin Saviour Butter and Organic Hydrating Cream, and removed lavender essential oil to ensure extra dermal safety for delicate baby skin. Moments like this remind me why I love DIY beauty so much, it’s not just about products, but about care, intention, and love. 💬 Now I’d love to hear from you: What handmade beauty projects did you make in December? It can be: - Skincare, hair care, or soap - Something for yourself or a loved one - A handmade gift for the holidays You’re welcome to share a photo or simply tell us in words ☺️ Every small creation matters here.🫶🏻

@Melanie Brown That’s so nice! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 What project do you have in mind next?

@Melanie Brown Well done for taking action and trying the Green Tea Lip Balm! 👏 Yes, it’s okay to use an essential oil for this formula, as long as it’s a very small amount. I recommend 2-3 drops only for the whole batch. A great option is sweet orange essential oil, it smells lovely and is not photosensitive, so it’s safe and gentle for a lip balm when used at low amounts.
Looking Ahead: Your DIY Beauty Goals for 2026
As we step into a new year, I’d love to pause and look forward together. DIY beauty is a personal journey, some of us are just beginning, some are building consistency, and others are exploring how this passion might grow over time. 💁‍♀️ What’s one DIY beauty goal or wish you have for 2026? It can be something simple or something you’re slowly dreaming about, such as: - Making your first handmade skincare product - Creating a gentle routine for yourself or your family - Learning more about natural ingredients - Gaining confidence in formulating - Exploring ways to earn from this passion at your own pace There’s no right or wrong answer, and no pressure to have everything figured out.Even a small intention counts :) I’ll start - my wish is to grow DIY Beauty Snacks into a warm, global community of 100 women, sharing and spreading the joy and empowerment of DIY beauty together.🙌 What about you?

@Melanie Brown I love that, that’s also exactly why I’m currently preparing skin-loving, beginner-friendly formulas with video tutorials, using my easy formulation framework so you can gain more confidence with formulating. Once everything is uploaded in the Classroom, I’ll announce it here in the group, so keep an eye out :)
