PTN FLASHWIRE / Nike Music Licensing Fraud Exposes a Trust Problem / August 7, 2026
Another one worth everyone's attention. This isn't an AI story or a copyright battle. It's a reminder that the music business still runs on one thing above everything else: trust. - 📍 SIGNAL A former Nike employee who managed music licensing, along with an outside music licensing consultant, has been charged over an alleged $1 million kickback scheme involving music licensing work for the company. Here's what prosecutors say happened in simple terms: Nike hired the consultant to help secure music for advertising campaigns and other creative projects. According to the indictment, the consultant allegedly submitted invoices charging Nike more than the actual cost of the music licensing work. Prosecutors allege the former Nike employee approved those inflated invoices even though they knew the costs had been artificially increased. After Nike paid those invoices, investigators say part of the extra money was secretly routed through another company and eventually paid back to the former Nike employee and the consultant as kickbacks. In other words, Nike believed it was paying legitimate business expenses, while prosecutors allege a portion of that money was quietly diverted into the defendants' own pockets. If proven in court, this wasn't simply accounting fraud. It allegedly exploited the trust built into the music licensing process, where companies rely on internal decision-makers and outside vendors to act honestly. For creators, this story isn't about AI or copyright. It's about one of the most valuable currencies in this business: Trust. - 📂 PATTERN Every successful licensing relationship is built on trust. Brands trust music supervisors. Music supervisors trust vendors. Vendors trust composers. Composers trust collaborators. When someone inside that chain allegedly abuses their position, the damage extends well beyond one company. Cases like this often lead to tighter approval processes, additional compliance requirements, more procurement oversight, and increased scrutiny for every legitimate vendor trying to build relationships.

“One bad apple…. Or this case 2” don’t spoil the whole bunch…… but it sure does make the process tougher. Great reminder about being trustworthy and pro. Thanks Gilde.

BRIEF ROOM – UPDATE
The deadline has come, and we received only a few submissions for this month’s Brief Room. Since this room is built around focused listening, critique, and comparing how different creators respond to the same direction, we are setting a 5-submission minimum, and at least 6-8 to be ideal for the session to run. So.......... tonight’s Brief Room will not take place. We are rolling “THE PHONE CALL” brief forward and will give everyone time to submit again. To those who already submitted, thank you. Your work carries over. - Check out the POST here for more info We want this room to be worth the time for everyone involved, so we are keeping it focused and intentional. More details on the next Brief Room date coming soon. -

Dohhhhhpe‼️
WELCOME TO THE BRIEF ROOM
We’re introducing something new inside PTN. A space where the brief gets set, and you bring the work. This is where your ability to read direction, respond to it, and deliver with intent gets tested and sharpened. We listen live, analyze in real time, and react through one lens: Does it serve the brief, while still making it yours? We set the brief, you bring the work. We’ll be bringing in hosts and guests who live in this space to listen, give feedback, and guide. Every brief is different. Different needs, different directions, different challenges. We’ll keep it moving so you’re not stuck in one lane. You can submit your work and step into it. You never know where this leads! Share it. Bring your people. Let’s build the room. Stay VERY Tuned...The first Brief Room session is coming.
