@Valesca Plett Sounds like a great start. Enjoy the journey!
How much AI do you actually use? 🤖
Hey folks, as the AI Hype Train is slowing down and we are finally seeing that "the emperor has no clothes" or better said "the chat is better at pretending it writes code than actually writing" I wanted to check how many of you use AI coding tools on an ongoing basis. We endorse Copilot at theSeniorDev and I use it every day(it is basically autocomplete on steroids). We tried GPT last year quite a lot but it usually takes too much work to make it output decent code. I use it as a translation tool mostly -> CSS to styled-components, JSON to YAML mostly repetitive tasks, nothing too "smart". What about you?

I've developed a couple of browser-based apps that utilize the OpenAI API. One of these has been my primary desktop tool for nearly two years and is constantly evolving. It's a simple chat interface I use for developing, debugging, documenting, writing emails, crafting resumes, and brainstorming. This tool has significantly boosted my productivity, especially in tracking down elusive, undocumented bugs. Also saving me time by eliminating the need for most of my internet searches that are typically riddled with ads and paid results (as long as they are not too recent). While the code generated by LLMs isn't always perfect, the new perspectives and concepts they introduce and time and frustration saved are all invaluable to me. So, I guess it use it a lot? :)

@Daniel Malmgren de Oliveira No hype intended, but it does seem that the 4o model is capable of handling less specific instructions and filling in more gaps. One might say it's more intuitive compared to the 3.5 models. That's my personal observation, primarily working through the API for coding tasks and text generation. @Bogdan Nedelcu One can make things fly by adding better engines. https://www.spacex.com/launches/ ...even cars (6 years ago) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbSwFU6tY1c I have yet to see anyone more then scratch the surface on GPT/LLMs. There is a lot of information/knowledge in there, we just need to ask the right questions. :)
AI driven valuable?
Personally I think it is valuable, not only in learning new skills, but in refining existing ones. I've been using AI for past 5 months during my redundancy period, I've learnt quite a lot from it. However, is there a risk that a current or future employer may see AI as basically cheating - why would they pay me $x where they could get a junior to do the same job? I think it depends on the business mindset, and I know that in the UK there is not a great amount of trust from senior management. Even after Covid I am seeing more and more companies wanting hybrid models, and to get people back in the offices. I see that as a trust issue, like they basically want you to be heads down for 7.5 hours a day, and they can't control that if you are not in an office. Maybe though, these are not the forward thinking companies that we want to be working for? I just thought it was an interesting point and warrants a discussion.

AI is just a tool to assist you, not a shortcut or a form of cheating. Consider reflecting on what you truly want in your career. Do you want to work for a company that resists change, or one that embraces new technologies and flexible work models? Take control of your career path and pursue opportunities that align with your aspirations. If there are trust issues, it's not going to work anyway. Just move on. (one guy's opinion)

I'm sure I don't fully grasp your situation, but I've been in a similar position myself. It's important to realize that even when our choices aren't perfect, we still have the power to make decisions. Often, it's about picking the best option from a less-than-ideal set and taking things one step at a time. Making the best possible choice given your current circumstances can lead to better opportunities tomorrow. Having a clear vision of what you want in your next role, where you want to be, and who you want to work with can help guide your daily decisions. Wishing you all the best!

@Ernest Oganji Based on personal experience, worrying is not productive. Comparing ourselves to others or trying to catch up is futile. Each of us is on our own unique journey, with our own set of skills, strengths, and weaknesses. The key is to focus on how we use our time, make choices, and strive for balance in order to grow and succeed. It's about becoming the best version of ourselves. Begin by evaluating your current position, choose a goal or direction to pursue, and take a step towards it...repeat. Options and goals can change, the important part is continuing to re-assess AND take the next step.

@Bogdan Nedelcu I agree with the sentiments. It's important to remember that while new technologies may come and go, the core principles of logic, problem solving and software development remain timeless. By focusing on mastering the fundamentals, we can build a solid foundation for a long and successful career in the industry. Embracing new technologies like today's Generative AI can certainly enhance our skills, but it's crucial to remember that true expertise comes from continuous learning and improvement. In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, it's essential to stay passionate about what we do and strive to be the best in our field. Whether we choose to delve into AI or any other new technology, dedication and mastery of the basics will always be key to success. *Significant tech waves have come along about every 11-14 years AI wave is coming fast. Just like all previous waves, one can try to catch it and ride it or keep paddling. Either way, we are all in for a ride!
How do you see the job market?
In the last months, we've seen the European job market (London, Berlin, Amsterdam) improve significantly. Developer openings are popping up, and things seem to have returned to normal. How is it on your side?

The job market in the United States is like a hall of mirrors. Most job postings on boards are from third or fourth party recruiters who typically do not have a direct connection to the hiring manager or end client. Opportunities with real potential attract a high volume of applicants on platforms like LinkedIn, sometimes receiving over 100 applications per hour. Despite this, many positions remain open for extended periods of time (weeks or months). It is increasingly clear that employment and economic reporting is flawed, likely serving a particular agenda and diverting attention from the true state of affairs. It is not unreasonable to suspect that job boards and postings may be part of this misleading narrative. Not expecting any real change under the current administration. If we can drain the swamp and find individuals with common sense to fill those roles. There is hope for significant improvement as early as 2025Q1.
