Claude just dropped Opus 4.8 — here’s what changed from 4.7
Anthropic released Opus 4.8 on May 28, 2026 — just 41 days after Opus 4.7. That’s an unusually fast upgrade cycle and worth paying attention to. Here’s what actually changed and why it matters. 🔒 What’s new in Opus 4.8 vs 4.7: Smarter and more honest. Opus 4.8 is roughly four times less likely than 4.7 to let flaws in its own outputs pass without flagging them. In plain terms — it tells you when something is wrong rather than just giving you a confident answer that isn’t quite right. For anyone using Claude to write prompts, scripts, or automation workflows this is a real improvement. Better reasoning and coding. It scores 69.2% on SWE-bench Pro, up from 64.3% on Opus 4.7, and posts a major jump in mathematical reasoning — 96.7% on USAMO 2026 vs 69.3% for 4.7. If you use Claude to help write and debug prompts or build automation systems, you’ll notice the difference. Dynamic Workflows. Anthropic launched a feature called Dynamic Workflows alongside the model, designed to help Opus manage complex tasks across hundreds of parallel subagents. Think of it as Claude being able to split a huge task into smaller pieces, run them simultaneously, and merge the results. This is Phase 9 thinking — automation at scale. Effort control. Users can now choose how much effort Claude puts into a response — “extra” for difficult tasks and long-running workflows, or standard for quick queries. More effort = more tokens = better output on complex briefs. Faster and same price. Fast mode for Opus 4.8 runs at 2.5x the speed and is now three times cheaper than fast mode was on previous models. Same pricing as 4.7 at standard speed. What this means for us practically: For prompt writing, automation building, and script generation — Opus 4.8 is a genuine upgrade. The honesty improvement alone makes it more reliable for the kind of iterative prompt work we do in Phases 2-6. For casual use — the difference between 4.7 and 4.8 won’t feel dramatic in day to day prompting. But for complex multi-step workflows and long automation tasks it compounds.
