Favourite skill to teach
What is the skill or concept that you enjoy teaching players the most? and what is it about said skill/concept you enjoy?

For sure! I really enjoy watching a player understand the concept of 'touch' when developing consistent floater work

@Brendan Williams I love this. What have you found to be the biggest challenge when teaching younger players this concept?
Scouts before or after training
Currently struggling with keeping player retention during scouts we currently do them before training on Thursday preparing for our weekend games, and was wondering if this small change could help?

In my last practice before a game (if we don't get a game day shoot around) I'll do film scout before we get on the floor, then we go over scout on the floor as part of our practice. I then make all scout resources available for athletes to watch/read in their own time. Then come gameday. I'll test the starting group on things like matchups, key sets/actions. I think doing them before practice is the best way to go. What struggles are you having with retention?

@Isaac Chow Are scout resources available to players between the practice and game? It might be that the retention issues you're facing is because the players don't have access to the material outside of the practice you go over them. If the resources are available, it sounds like your players aren't engaging with them outside of the practice. You could try testing them on it. Start with your starting group and come up with 2-3 questions that cover the key points in the scout you want to make sure the players know. then as they start to understand that more you can expand the group that get questions or add in an extra question or two. The other option you could try. Is having the scout accessible (We would usually have a one-pager) available on your bench that you can refer to if they happen to forget.
Rebounders and Defenders
Does any have rebounded and defenders in their workouts? If so, How do you compensate them for there time?

I've been this (Rebounder/Defender) for workouts. And it's exactly as Danny mentioned. Being hungry to learn needs to be main drive for them. I was fortunate enough that through my time volunteering as a Reb/Def. I was given elements of workouts to run that were directly aligned with what I was wanting to learn more about. so maybe it's not compensation in the traditional sense (money etc). But maybe something that is tied directly to what they hope to get out of the time spent in your environment.
9 Lessons I've Learned as a Player Development Coach
1. Every player learns differently 2. The "Drills" you use aren't as important as the "why" behind each drill 3. Finding Solutions to Problems (as quick as possible) makes you a great coach 4. Having Defenders/rebounders make the workout 10x better 5. Coming in with a plan gives you confidence to command the workout 6. Focus on 1 thing at a time 7. Shooting is the most important skill in basketball 8. Live Defense > Cone drills 9. Nothing beats simply playing basketball What would you add?

@Owen Gantt I think having an aspect of adaptability is great for workouts. Having a plan is always great and shows your preparedness. While having some elements of on the fly shows players your ability to adapt on the fly
Film study
What do you look for when you watch film
1 like • 9d
It depends on the context in which I'm watching. I've found in some experiences with other coaches that they think players need to see lots of film. I believe it's important to show only what you need and trying to find examples of what you want players to do to help reinforce the points you're trying to make. If it's for individuals. Film observations are soley based on the details of a particular skill that I'm working on a player with. If it's for a team/scout. My focus is on identifying themes and key points (usually backed up by some statistics) that teams do well then finding film where teams have had success against it. If it's for review: then I'm looking at my own team's habits and principles and finding examples in film where these have been executed to a mutually agreed standard and examples where they haven't been executed for whatever reason.
