We got some hard news in our family this past week. Someone close to us is sick. Came out of nowhere. My boys wanted to do something. Fix it. Help somehow. That's how we're wired as men I think - something's wrong, we go find a way to be useful even when there's nothing useful to do. My daughters went a different direction. My eleven year old disappeared for a while. Came back with a card she made by hand. Not just any card. She looked up things she knew this person would love. Found images of the Puerto Rican flag, the coqui, the trees. Drew the whole thing herself. Wrote a message inside that I'm not going to share because it wasn't for me, it was for them. But I saw it. This kid is eleven. And she sat down and thought about what would make someone she loves feel seen. Not just feel better. Feel seen. Her little sister saw the card and made her own. Different but also really good. I don't always know how to connect with my daughters the way I want to. But I know that when I see who they're becoming I'm doing something right. Or at least not messing it up too badly. Celebrate your kids' art. Whatever form it takes. That's how you make sure they never stop making it. How do your kids handle hard news?
