When I did my art foundation course, we were all handed a sketchbook at the start of the year. It quickly became a bit competitive. You'd see what everyone else was doing and think, "mine isn't as good as theirs!!" I got blank page paralysis. 😱 Some days I was so worried about what to put on the page that I couldn't put anything at all. 😔 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙤𝙩 𝙢𝙚 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙞𝙣. A piece of brown paper, something torn out of a magazine, anything. Once something was on the page, it wasn't blank anymore, and I could just add to it. That sketchbook ended up really fat and full of interesting things! I still do it now, and that's why I make these. 🍂 - - - - - - - - - - 𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗬 𝗕𝗜𝗥𝗗𝗦 & 𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗶𝘅 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸. Each one is a two-page spread with its own little woodland friend: 🦔 A sleepy hedgehog curled up in the leaves 🐦 A robin in the holly, with a tiny nest 🍓 Rosehips with a robin and a wren 🍂 Red berries with a wren 🐭 Berries and rosehips with a little mouse 🌸 Spindle berries with a dormouse tucked up for winter Write over them, draw on them, chop them up for collage. However you use them, the page is never blank. 🎥 This one just dropped into my YouTube suggestions and I had to share it What Happens When You Stop Trying to Draw Properly? With illustrator Shoo Rayner It's just really lovely. He takes his sketchbook for a walk along the canal and talks about embracing the flaws, and how sketching isn't supposed to be perfect. It's there to help you look at what's around you and maybe jog your memory later. He draws the same swan over and over, puts a dog next to a slice of cake, and draws a coffee cup from two angles at once, and he's completely happy with all of it. He's basically giving you permission for things not to be perfect, and to just enjoy it. 🦢 Well worth 5 minutes of your time. ☕ 💬 Once you've watched it, tell me what stayed with you.
