Tier1
Don´t you have the impression that we are overwhelmed with Tier1 products all over?! Despite of existing Bloomberg definition of Tier1, I have the impression that many of the market players have self-declared their Tier1 status. Somehow similar to star-rating in the hotel industry. On the other hand, it can be that some of the "ordinary" module makers might be even better quality than many Tier1. So the question is: Does "Tier1" have any specific meaning for you? Is that the decision-driver?

@Călin Sas I wouldn´t be against either. Just need to make sure that it will be more than just a fancy title.

@Călin Sas I agree with you. It is really strange. I know companies which simply don´t care and trust their feelings (and the price). On the other side of the spectrum are companies, which are doing very detailed due diligence. I have seen a company which performed an audit with the module supplier and prepared a check-list with 2200 check-items.....
Problem with Monopolies

That's with most Utilities ( worldwide ) keeping their Monopoly and asking for expensive add ons ......

@Andreas Iliou Incredible. I never thought of that.

@Andreas Iliou That sounds incredible. Having a smart meter shall be in the interest of all stake-holders. Actually, speaking of which - KPMG made a screening of the energy invoices for both private and commercial sector. They get so complicated and fuckin´ confusing that no one even knows, what they pay for. They showed an invoice charged to Skoda Automotive, where there were "fines" carefully hidden in the invoice. Thousands and thousands €, which was Skoda paying every month, as they were not able to detect it anyhow....
Role of Insurance companies....
It happened to me several times. Talking to a project owner. Some lousy products are on the BOM. I advise the owner to re-consider replacing some of the components. Reaction? Nah, I don´t want to add more money into the project. If something goes wrong, I am covered with insurance. My question is obvious: Are the insurance companies aware of the risk which are they taking? And what they do to minimize it? Does anyone here have any practical experience with insurance companies? And how do the insurance companies react for the exponentially growing risk?

@Călin Sas I agree with you! I am always speechless, when I meet with the purchasers. They give me a 1 hour monologue about how they care about the safety. The quality is their top requirement. And the supplier must go through thorough due diligence. And then, when they disclose the BOM, I can´t believe my eyes. Sometimes even companies I have never heard of. Why? Because if they don´t do it, they will lose the project. So it is worth the risk.

@Călin Sas Exactly. With few exceptions, I don´t have any contacts in the insurance companies, though..... 🤦‍♂️
Hail Resistance - a bit of controversy
I would like to offer you 2 points of view on hail resistance which I am seeing in my social bubble. 1. It shall be within the interest of every module maker to develop and design the modules with an improved hail resistance (resisting bigger hail size without damage), as the "hail showers" are more and more frequent even in regions where it was not very usual. The massive hail damage can happen nearly everywhere, therefore, never ending robustness improvements shall be part of the strategy of each module maker. 2. The fact that hail does not break the glass, but very likely breaks the cells is leading to situations that the asset owners have damaged plant, but proving it to the insurance company gets really expensive (EL screening). Insurance companies are reluctant to cover the damages, if the glass is not broken. For the sake of clarity, it would be the best, if the glass breaks as a matter of evidence. Then the whole insurance claim process goes much faster and the countermeasures can be done fast, cheap and easy. I wonder, which of those 2 ways is more resonating with you and why.

@Călin Sas That sounds interesting. On the other hand, is that the "universal advice"? Perhaps it is really necessary to have a deep look on each project separately, as what Stefan mentioned here.

@Călin Sas Thank you for your note. I would see it in a similar way. For me, this topic is interesting from the business communication point of view. Look how some companies do great efforts to make their products hail resistant. At the same time, look at other module makers, how they settle a narrative to demonstrate that fighting the hail damages is actually not in the interest of the end-user. From the "communication-anatomy" point of view, it is a really interesting situation to observe.
What are you seeing with early-stage leads?
Do you think homeowners today prefer to research solar quietly on their own first, or do they still want to speak to someone early in the process? I’m seeing mixed behavior and I’m curious what you’re seeing in the field :)

@Che Oomes It is with no doubts. We all here, we are PV professionals. We know, what to look for. Where the hidden bombs are. But an ordinary family house owner. Ask him, whether he prefers Jinko over Trina? I bet 99% of them have no clue, what are you talking about.....

@Călin Sas Great example. I remember once knocking on the neighbor´s door with an advice that he shall cut the bush on his flat roof, which was shadowing his PV array. He was looking surprised to me and said that the EPC company told him that the PV is maintenance free through the whole life. 🙈💩🙈
