The secret to better kissing and less stress: breathwork and the Alexander Technique
Can the Alexander Technique, a 100-year-old secret to breathing, posture and movement actually lead to a deeper connection and better relationships? In today’s episode, host Katy Rickitt talks with Alexander Technique and Breathwork expert James Power to explore the surprising link between how we carry our bodies and how we experience relationships with other people. Most of us think of the Alexander Technique as a way to reduce back or neck pain, but as James explains, it’s often about cultivating whole body awareness and waking up the conscious mind. When you release the chronic tension that blocks your breath and disrupts your presence, your nervous system shifts from "fight, flight freeze" to a state where you can truly connect with yourself and others. In this episode, we dive into: The "Kissing Tension" Trap: Why over-eagerness and physical "reaching" can hinder a genuine spark. The Easygoing breath: How James helps clients drop the tension in their muscles to become more physically present. How to Experience Connection: Shifting from "performing" a movement to allowing a shared, authentic experience. The Anatomy of Presence: Why a free neck leads to a more open and genuine version of yourself. Whether you're looking to lower your daily stress levels or want to bring a new level of mindfulness to your relationships, this conversation will change the way you move, breathe, and connect. The Alexander Technique & Breath: How to Stop Forcing Your Breathing
I am absolutely thrilled to share the very first sample from my new online breathwork course. This landscape version provides a more in-depth look at the principles we will be exploring together. I will let you in on a little secret: to get this footage, I had to move past some serious camera nerves. My work is usually one-to-one or with large groups, so the thought of speaking to a cold lens made me want to hold my breath and stay in bed. I had to put my own teaching into practice by stopping that immediate "fight or flight" response every time the camera and lights came on. During the filming process, I focused on finding my "up" and allowing my breath to happen rather than forcing it. This is the Alexander Technique in action; it is about finding genuine ease even when you feel a bit exposed. Creating a breathwork course has been a brilliant challenge, and I want to share what I have learned with as many people as possible. This snippet captures the heart of the course, which is dedicated to the process of unlearning old habits and rediscovering your natural poise. I am so grateful to everyone who has helped make this project so special. In this video, you will learn: How to identify the "fight or flight" response in your own body. The Alexander Technique principle of "finding your up." A first look at the sample lesson from the upcoming course.
