Intro and Looking For Some Advice
Hi I’m David and I just recently turned 21 a couple months ago. I’ve only been playing poker for about a year and half but have been studying and playing multiple times a week seriously for the past 6 months. I’m in college so I mainly play home games or online. I was working two jobs last winter part time and was winning pretty decently at the .25/.50 home games I was playing so I decided to make the jump to 1/2. I was a small winner at 1/2 booking some huge wins but always came back and punted it off playing high asf chasing that dopamine at the table. I definitely was not properly rolled for this jump as I am/was an impulsive spender blowing my paychecks and winnings on clothes, weed, alcohol and other vices. I’m privileged and lucky to not have to worry about paying for tuition and housing with scholarships and these jobs really just served as fuel for my vices. I saw pretty much all other areas in my life decline during this time; health, sleep, relationships and school. I’ve also been struggling with depression the past 3 years due to a multitude of things in my personal life and I really felt like I hit rock bottom January/February of this year. I decided to make a change once my romantic relationship ended to better myself in all aspects of my life. This was around the same time Joey posted his first instagram reel. Joey inspired me to stay consistent and trust the process. I stopped smoking weed completely and have been slowly building healthy habits like eating right, going to the gym and aiming for 8 hours of sleep. Playing poker completely sober has done wonders for me as I feel a sense of clarity at the table I never have before. I have decided to take a break from poker besides small home games with my friends as I’ve been unemployed since March in order to prioritize my sleep and school work. I have an internship in Portland this summer. It’s a software engineering internship so I’ll be making decent money. As I work on building up my discipline in all aspects of my life, I wanted to build a proper bankroll for 1/2 and hopefully play some tournaments as well. I’m looking for any tips on building a bankroll for 1/2. I would love to play smaller stakes games live, but those are hard to find and I also prefer live over online.

I've been having some trouble. Had a $5k run up in March then suddenly down $3500 in 2 weeks! 😫 Right before wsop Austin too. I'm a dealer so just grinding dealing until the tournament in 13 days no bankroll rn after that slide. Glad y'all are here.

What really happened, and this is the cycle. Is I made day 2 of a big event, had a bad loss at the cash game the night before, didn't go into day 2 feeling good and bombed it, then I was chasing after that. Lost 900 on a Tues, played a $460 100k Gtd on Wed, arrived late but reg'ed anyways and got cooked, then played PLO to get it back and lost another $600 (bad beat). Multiple sessions in there where I was up 4-600 and didn't leave, multiple times where I asked to leave work early or gave up shifts at my real job just to lose money in the cash game. That's kind of my pattern. Run good, work less, start losing, right back in the same position or worse. I did actually just invest some money in a training course and group to start my own business. I was feeling really trapped in poker at the end of last year and I found a good opportunity to make a change and start my own thing. That was just a month ago and I've been playing instead of studying for the new business. Hypothetically if it goes well, the business can generate semi-passive income and I can study poker and play more, or get out of the industry altogether. But I have to stay away from the tables enough and dedicate the time to building the thing. Will be making a plan soon.
Trying to be better
What’s up guys. Name’s Dustin. I’m currently 27 and was feeling lost for years. I had a 50k roll 3 years ago and found a way to torch almost all of it. Casino, poker, sports betting, investing, drugs, you name it. Almost everything in my life that I enjoyed to do from age 20-26 bled me out. I always found a way to spend money instead of saving, I never quite really “understood” how important saving and stacking was until I pretty much lost all of it. Here I am 27 years old with $2,000 to my name. This isn’t intended to be a sob story, but perhaps the beginning of a real rebuild. For 1 month I’ve been sober off drugs, which doesn’t sound impressive but for me it’s fucking monumental. I’ve cut unnecessary spending completely (besides girlfriend expenses lol), I haven’t played poker in about 6 months, haven’t placed a single bet in 4 months, and I honestly have no intention of looking back at the moment. I’ve had a serving job where they allowed me to work 1 day a week and that’s literally what I did for years, because I had it in my mind that gambling would reward me far more than waiting tables ever could. The upswings were pretty nice, but the downswings? Absolutely fucking brutal. You could see I set myself up to fail, I was just too blind to realize it I told myself I was gonna make a change and 2 months ago I’ve been picking up more shifts and set myself a goal to work 4 days a week (at the very least) and put in 10-12 hours each shift to get me back on my feet. I’m doing well in following through so far, just this week I’ve put in 43 hours By the end of 2026 hopefully I’ll have at least 20k from honest work. I’m really aiming for 30/40k but after bills, groceries, gym, and girlfriend, I think 20k is much more reasonable. If you’ve made it this far I genuinely thank you for reading my story, and by the end of 2026 hopefully I’ll have something good to tell you guys. Until then, I’ll just be grinding.

@Joey Johnson to thanks for sharing. I've been on the same rollercoaster for 6 years. Never saving just games, occasionally drugs, girls, just degen stuff. Really admiring your story hoping to do some refocusing myself soon and stick to a plan.
