The process of track creation. Mixing after or during?
Hello guys. I need your opinion on how to distribute your time and efforts during the process of creating a track from scratch. I found myself in a methodological trap trying to mix during production and writing. I always do everything in parallel, however I'm in a doubt because it has some cons that I really feel. So I think if you try to mix or engineer the sound BEFORE you have completed the musical ideas you risk to spend much more time and even get very tired of the track you are working on. And I've got tired of a couple of latest tracks trying to make them sound as perfect as possible.

I need sounds to feel good early on to stay creatively excited, so I use pre-mixing to get them tonally and characteristically into the right general place as the idea develops. I want each sound to clearly communicate its role and keep me inspired without getting lost in technical details too soon. Once the idea is fleshed out, I go back section by section and mix as critically as possible. At that point, I either rebuild a detailed sound from scratch to replace the placeholder, or I adjust the original sound upstream.

The OTG Plugin Regulars
It's not plugins, it's skills. But. No reason to reinvent the wheel! We all know @Owen Palmer you prefer certain plugins as staples in the group calls. Good workflows, big results for the effort. Lets name them! I'll maintain the list in this OP and will start us off with one. Soniformer

@Owen Palmer nope, I meant power shaper. Not a big deal haha - I have it, I like it well enough. If I come across it in an archive video you’ll be hearing from me 🤓

How is THIS allowed? JV-880 in software (free) 🎯
Unbelievable! I own a real Roland JV-880, it's one of my all-time favourite synths... And this random dude has had the NERVE to release a FREE plugin emulation for everyone. 😭 The worst part is he's done a REALLY good job and it sounds JUST like the real thing!!! 😡 Abysmal behaviour. I hope NONE of you go pick up the files from his GitHub: https://github.com/giulioz/jv880_juce/releases 🙄

@Dean Jehan @Owen Palmer agreed. I feel a lot better than before and can get results I need maybe 60% of the time… but there are some basic sounds I feel like I SHOULD be able to make that just end up spinning my head during prep

NOISE !!!
I promised I'd upload the OTG Noise packs, although I'm still unhappy about the poor organisational structure. For now, you can just grab them from this thread, so you can get to using the noises straight away. If anyone has any bright ideas about how to devise a structure that makes sense for easy and convenient access in Serum AND Vital, then please do share. Until I've solved that puzzle, I won't do an official upload in the Classroom area

Did this ever get a revamp? Was looking for the noise files you used to make a kick/snare transient during one of the sample prep group calls, but I couldn't find it in my local samples. Was this where you you were pulling from or is there another OTG Noise pack we can download? I only see Noise Floors and Kick Tops in the Sample Archive.
