The crate
So this dog was given to me by the breeders after being returned twice for some pretty typical Dutch Shepherd behaviors. We are taking it slow, and I am giving him lots of time and space to just show me who he is and what he needs. What breaks my heart though is how he feels about the crate. It has been absolutely poisoned for him. We’ve already made huge progress in reconditioning what crate means, but I can see that when his previous owners didn’t know how to handle him they just locked him in a box and left him there. He has flat feet from being left in the crate for hours and hours. He has no endurance. He can barely walk a mile without getting winded. He doesn’t even run. Crates are a necessary part of life in my multi-dog household, but I am very much against the working dog mindset of leave the dog in the box unless he is working with you. I think it creates very serious mental and physical deficits in the dog. So I am curious: do you use a crate? If so what role does it play in your dog’s life? How much time do they spend in it? What are your thoughts on the idea of the dog should only be outside of the bpx to work?

@Jane Purdon this sounds very sensible to me, and similar to how I live with my own dogs. Thank you for sharing!

@Birdy O'Sheedy Pax sounds like such a fun and exuberant guy! I love this creative solution of blocking off a hallway for him. What a nice way to give him space but still let him be a part of the family (and save his tail!!) 😆
✨ Welcome to Magic Moments!
This is a space for the quiet, sacred, soul-deep experiences we share with our dogs ... the kind that stay with you, long after the moment has passed. Here, we honour the moments that feel like whispers from something bigger: ✨ That deep look your dog gave you when words weren’t needed ✨ The way they found you when you were hurting ✨ A moment that made you stop and feel grateful ✨ A sign, a synchronicity, or a soft moment that took your breath away ✨ A dream, a ritual, a knowing Whether it’s big and bold or small and subtle, if it stirred something in your heart, it belongs here. You can share a short story, a photo, or just a feeling. Let this be a sacred thread of connection and presence. 🌟 To explore other spaces in the sanctuary, just click “Categories” above. Each one is a place to explore, share, and feel at home. This is a co-created space, tended with love. Your magic is welcome here. ✨ With love, Birdy & Pax (Canine Executive Officer) 💛

We travel to do bitework since we live in the middle of nowhere, and really, what has become my favorite part, is the quiet night of camping together before we make it to the training center. We hike, we explore, I share my cheese. These moments are everything.

@Melanie Sweeney haha! That would totally keep them busy! Thankfully we have a large solar array and plenty of sun so mostly they get to chase rabbits in the free air. I wouldn’t rule it out though🤔

@Melanie Benware lol you know it! He actually has a lovely recall even though people tell us it is impossible to have an off leash husky, but it isn’t! They just don’t care about things the way other dogs do so you have to get creative.
