👀 DistroKid & UMG
If you haven’t seen the news, Universal Music Group (UMG) has filed a lawsuit against DistroKid, alleging deceptive trade practices and copyright infringement. UMG alleges that DistroKid has allowed DSPs to be flooded with mass-uploaded AI-generated music and allegedly unauthorized content, including remixes, speed-altered recordings, and tracks containing unlicensed samples. 💡 Important: These are allegations in a pending lawsuit, not findings proven in court. The complaint also goes beyond AI itself, raising concerns about allegedly infringing uploads and distribution safeguards. 🧠 Quick Question: Are you using DistroKid? @Melvin Rogers nothing wrong with trying a new distributor! But yes, if you have a good setup already, a new distributor makes most sense when you have a strategy behind it.

Off the bat, I can say that in order to have clarity when managing an artist, you first need to define the goal you’re trying to reach that is aligned with the artist's vision. If paperwork is holding you back perhaps it's time to delegate or audit your process for optimization!

As a music business consultant, I’ve seen mechanical royalties become a consistent source of income for artists who have the right collection system in place before their music takes off. @John Barbosa Hey John! How much you get paid depends on a few factors, such as the platform and even the subscription tier the stream comes from. Having your royalty collection system in order doesn’t replace the need to market your music effectively. I understand that’s where a lot of artists get stuck, which is why the next area to tackle is your marketing strategy. Unfortunately, a lot of the investment required for a successful music career can be front-loaded, with the hope of seeing a return later. That’s why having both a solid royalty collection system and a long-term marketing strategy matters.
