I went vegan after watching a vegan YouTuber talk about animals as sentient beings, and ask some hypotheticals. Currently, I do activism through various organisations, campaign work and public education (ethics, nutrition, science). Based in London.
I became vegan 7.5 years ago. The journey began when we welcomed a new family member - a dog named Sofo. It was the first time we had a non-human animal in our family. I had always claimed to love animals, but I also loved food. I loved meat, and I was proud of it. At the time, I never questioned that contradiction. About two years later, I found myself stuck in a traffic jam next to a truck transporting cows to slaughter. As I waited, my eyes met the eyes of one of the cows. We looked at each other for several seconds, and in that moment I felt her sorrow and agony. It suddenly became clear to me that there was no difference between her and Sofo. I imagined him in her place and realized the paradox of loving animals while using them. I immediately became vegetarian (which really surprised my surroundings), and within two to three weeks, I transitioned to veganism (which really, really surprised my surroundings). About 4.5 years ago, at the beginning of my M.A., I was looking for a side job when I came across an ad from Sentient (www.sentientworld.org). Two months later, I quit university and started working full-time for animals. I’ve been there ever since.
