Biomechanics Coaching - So what? ..........
My philosophy is that our responsibility as a rider is to be as easy to carry as possible and to communicate with our horse as clearly as possible. The horse's responsibility is to do as we ask as long as our request is reasonable, they understand what we are asking and they are capable of doing it. Simple .... But definitely not easy! So where does Biomechanics Coaching fit into this? Firstly, let's be clear. Everyone is different and every horse is different. There are no absolutes and there is no perfect symmetry. BUT there is always room for improvement. Biomechanics Coaching serves to assess our current state, identify potential dysfunction, address it and monitor progress. Put simply, you need to know: โžก๏ธWhere you're starting? e.g. Your Biomechanics screen identifies dysfunction in range of movement of the right hip joint. โžก๏ธWhere you want to be? e.g. You want to increase your range of movement so that it is more like the left hip joint. โžก๏ธHow you're going to get there? e.g. You do your iMoveFreely exercises every day for a week. โžก๏ธHow you know when you're there? e.g. Your Biomechanics re-screen identifies an improvement in your range of movement. (This is a really simplified idea of improving symmetry, I haven't even got started on body awareness (proprioception), strength, balance or co-ordination ๐Ÿ˜…). Then you plan the next step, either reviewing what needs to change in order to progress or building on your success and heading for the next challenge! Anyone familiar with the concept of goal-setting is nodding their head vigorously right now!! So have a think ......... What can you work on to make yourself even easier to to carry and even easier to understand? ๐Ÿค”

You know what, this really helped me this week. I let my old cob go on Tuesday and although I am utterly heartbroken, I kept this concept in mind. I'm allowing myself to feel sad but I know this will pass. I'm also focusing on feeling so grateful and happy that he was in my life for so long and we did so many things together. So thank you for the timing of this ๐Ÿ˜Š.
Wish me luck!
Today I am finally having my foot surgery, I have a very painful Mortons neuroma, which after today will be no more, I look forward to walking, riding, running and just wearing footwear pain free ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š โ€ฆ.
Wish me luck!

Biomechanics Coaching - The 'what' and the 'why'.
So ..... Biomechanics looks at the mechanical laws relating to our structure and movement. We can then split it further into two areas - Extrinsic and Intrinsic. Extrinsic Biomechanics focuses on WHAT we can see. The observable positions or movements that can be measured and analysed. For example, your coach may look at your position and identify whether you are tipping forwards, collapsing, leaning or twisting and offer cues to help change and correct your position. We can also go further and use clothing, equipment or grids/boxes overlaid on pictures or videos for further feedback. It essentially allows us to note and address the symptoms. Intrinsic Biomechanics offers a system to assess the body's skeleton, muscles and nerves to look deeper into WHY positions or movements happen in a particular way. For example, is there muscular dysfunction around your pelvis causing you to hike one hip higher than the other or is your range of movement through your spine restricted? It allows us to look deeper, identify and address a cause. Once we can identify the WHY, we can more effectively address the WHAT ๐Ÿ˜Š. Next time we'll look at iMoveFreely and how it links to Biomechanics Coaching ๐Ÿ‘.

@Sally Valentine totally ๐Ÿ™‚. It's so important to look at the bigger picture. Our movement patterns/habits are repeated day in, day out and impact everything we do.
