WHY I STARTED MEI-AFRICA I started Men Empowerment Initiative-Africa (MEI-AFRICA) because two issues deeply concern me: the broken family structure and the silent pain men carry. Take Liberia as a case study. Our family structures are changing. Some marriages break down. Some men leave. Some relationships between fathers and mothers never become marriages in the first place. Some men have children with multiple women and struggle to maintain healthy relationships with their children and their mothers. The causes are complex—financial pressure, infidelity, conflict, emotional immaturity, poor communication, unplanned pregnancies, irresponsibility, social pressures and, sometimes, simply not knowing how to build and sustain a healthy family. But whatever the cause, the children often pay the highest price. Some are forced to become adults too early. Some grow up without adequate guidance from their fathers. And some eventually repeat the same patterns, becoming parents before they are prepared to be the parents their children need. That cycle has to be broken. I believe men need to be challenged to take responsibility, but they also need the tools, mentorship and support to do better. Because men hurt too. Many carry financial pressure, failure, loneliness, rejection, relationship struggles and personal pain in silence because they were taught that “men shouldn't cry.” So who helps the man? MEI-AFRICA is built around that question. We want to create a culture where men help men—where men can be held accountable, but also supported; where they can seek guidance without being called weak; and where becoming a better man, father and leader is a journey we don't have to walk alone. If we can help men heal, grow and take responsibility, we can help restore families and break generational cycles. Liberia is our starting point. Africa is the vision.
