I sent this video to a few people in the group this week. Robert Greene breaking down his really great book Mastery in 8 minutes. Here's the short version of his 6 steps: - Find your life's task. The thing your specific mix of experience and skill points you toward. - Go through an apprenticeship. Your 20s (or your first years in any new field) should be about learning, not earning. - Find a mentor. Not a hack, but the closest thing to one. Someone who already made the mistakes you're about to make. ✅ [you're already here so you've got it!] - Build social intelligence. You can be technically great and still get passed over because you're hard to work with. - Unlock creativity. Once you've put in the reps, you start making things nobody else could've made. - Fuse intuition with skill. This is mastery. You stop thinking and start feeling what comes next. - I shared it with @David Goode , and he watched it with a buddy of his. Dave's takeaway stuck with me: Once you get honest about who you are and what you're actually good at, that understanding changes what you put into your work. He didn't call it luck. He called it a kind of realization. Here's why this matters for sync specifically: Most people trying to break into sync licensing skip step one. They chase what's trending instead of figuring out what they're actually built to make. That's why they burn out or quit after six months. If you don't know your lane, you can't build a body of work that sounds like you, and sync supervisors are looking for a specific sound, not a generic one. .... this album, that turns 20 today, changed my life. .... I met some of the greatest musicians and engineers in the world and learned so much about making records from them. When I think back on what made the album so special, some thoughts come to mind, and they're worth my remembering: Life came into the room. I rode bikes on the beach. I was goofy - most of the images from these years are of me doing something wacky. The record took time. Months of writing, giving up on lots of songs, writing new ones, moving studios, taking breaks. As I get older l tend to expect results faster. I get frustrated a little easier. But it's always been the same; you work weeks and months on songs. Some don't make it, but it's never a waste of time. You live more life, you write more songs, and the process starts again. You cherish the tight little list of tunes that matter. When just one joins the ranks, it's a blessing. Joy wins out over discouragement. You have fun with your friends, who are all on the journey of exploring the unknown with you. Great albums are built in layers. You have to become different versions of yourself to create a lasting body of work. Nobody cares how long it takes if the music is meaningful. If you want to make something truly special, you have to bring talented people in the room to contribute.......
