🎩 MAGIC BEYOND TRICKS — FOUNDATION 03 IS NOW AVAILABLE
🌎 ENGLISH A new Foundation is now available inside Ruiz Magic Academy. ✨ Foundation 03 — Class A, B & C Material In Foundation 02, we organized our repertoire and separated what we can truly perform from what we still want to develop. Now we take the next step: What role does each piece of magic actually play inside your show? In this Foundation, I introduce the system I have used for years to classify repertoire into: Class A · Class B · Class C But this is not about deciding that one trick is “good,” another is “average,” and another is “bad.” It is about understanding impact and function. Which pieces are your strongest weapons? Which can open or close a show? Which work as transitions? Which change the rhythm, create participation, bring comedy, or simply give the audience a moment to breathe? Because a good show is not just a collection of powerful tricks. It is an experience built with contrast, rhythm and emotion. 🎭✨ 🎓 Foundation 03 — Class A, B & C Material is now available in the Classroom under MAGIC BEYOND TRICKS — FOUNDATIONS. And this prepares us for the next step: Foundation 04 — Structure Your Show Study · Practice · Create · Evolve — Roger Ruiz ✦ ───────────────── ✦ 🌎 ESPAÑOL Ya está disponible una nueva Foundation dentro de Ruiz Magic Academy.

Roger, thinking about the job each piece does in a show catches my interest more than simply collecting another trick. I enjoy close-up magic, and I can see how liking an effect doesn't automatically tell you where it belongs. Do you start classifying a piece by its effect on the audience or by where it fits in the show's flow?

@Roger Ruiz Thank you for such a detailed answer, Roger. Studying what the effect does first, then deciding where it belongs, clears up the order for me. The idea that a simpler routine can give the audience room to breathe is especially useful. I appreciate the time you put into explaining it.

Giving the audience room to react
My magic background is close-up card tricks at the Stampede Bar in Denver, working through Harmony Magic. These days I’m also learning more about communication, and I keep thinking about the space between what we say and how someone responds. Without discussing any methods, how do you work on the pauses in a performance? Do you rehearse them deliberately, or let the audience guide you? I’m interested in making the words feel like a conversation and giving people room to enjoy the moment. What helped you develop that timing?

Thank you for such a thoughtful answer, Roger. Rehearsing the structure while leaving room for the audience’s reaction makes the balance clearer to me. I also appreciate the reminder that a performance needs changes in rhythm. There’s a lot here I can reflect on from my close-up magic days without getting into methods.

@Mark LaBar That three- or four-second count makes the pause feel much more deliberate, Mark. You’re giving them time to process the effect rather than rushing to fill the space. Do you find the wait feels longer to you performing than it does when you watch a recording?

🌎 ENGLISH How much magic do you actually have ready to perform right now? Magic Beyond Tricks — Foundation 02: Build Your Magic Repertoire is now available inside the Classroom at Ruiz Magic Academy. ✨ In Foundation 01, we talked about being ready when opportunity comes. Now comes the next question: How do we actually prepare? In this Foundation, we begin by doing something simple — but extremely important: Make an inventory of your magic. The class introduces two essential lists: ✅ What I Can Perform Now ✨ What I Want to Perform The first is your current repertoire — material you could genuinely perform in front of an audience tomorrow. The second represents your future repertoire — techniques, routines, ideas and material you still want to develop. We also explore why it is important to organize your repertoire according to the type of work you do — close-up, parlor, stage, manipulation, mentalism, children’s magic, grand illusion, or whatever categories make sense for you professionally. 🎭 Because knowing many tricks does not necessarily mean having the right material ready for the right situation. One of the central ideas of this class is simple: Real progress is not how many secrets you know. It is how much material you have transformed into something you can truly perform. And instead of trying to finish everything at once, choose something. One routine. One technique. Five new minutes. Finish it — and move it from What I Want to Perform to What I Can Perform Now. That is real progress. 🎩✨ At the end of the class, I leave you with an exercise that will prepare us for Foundation 03, where we will begin classifying our repertoire into: Class A · Class B · Class C and start discovering which material should really become part of our show. Foundation 02 — Build Your Magic Repertoire Available now inside the MAGIC BEYOND TRICKS — FOUNDATIONS Classroom.

¡Hola, Daniel!
