Up at sparrow’s fart with a 16-year-old, a Staffy, and the sort of optimism that only exists before dawn. Car loaded. Coffee acquired. Dog convinced this was absolutely her idea. The Severn Bridge was… an experience I remember as a child being fun. This time my knees did that odd jelly thing. And my vertigo reminded me it likes attention. The Welsh countryside should not be talked about as everyone likes to keep it a secret apparently. But in Llandinam you can see the view just from our room window. The other side of the hill will make you go blind. Why the journey on Boxing day? My brother has just bought an old Vicarage that’s currently auditioning for a sequel to The Money Pit. Charming. Historic. Actively collapsing. The payoff is acres of land, slate roofs, soft hills and that calm, Welsh quiet that makes your nervous system unclench without asking permission. Over the next few days, the whole family descends. People I haven’t seen in years. Grand-nephews I’ve never met. Stories that will absolutely improve with repetition. It feels like one of those moments where life gently taps you on the shoulder and says, “Stop rushing. This bit matters.” If you’re travelling this week, especially with teenagers, dogs, or jelly knees, I highly recommend leaving plenty of time so the whole experience is unrushed, and appreciated.
