Question for Marines
My Fiancé and I (civilians) have been invited to the Lone Star Marine Ball at Ft Hood TX. The event flyer specifies "Formal Attire". Is this traditionally synonymous with Black Tie (Tux) or is a non-tux black suit and bow tie acceptable? Thank you.

@Gunny Khan I highly admire the USMC dress blues but I do not have the privilege of wearing those. Our Marine friend who invited us (and who goes regularly) said black suit is fine.

I love this combo. Esp my father's tie and my first pair of nice wingtips (Thursday Aviators previous generation in Mahogany) but still ness a few tweaks. 1) Need to take up jacket sleeves about a half inch. Suit supply already took it up but that's as far as it can go due to surgeon cuffs. Maybe it can be done at the shoulder/arm? (I feel like the rest of the jacket fits great in the chest/shoulder area) 2) My favorite dress shirts (Lands End 17/33) Has now become to small in neck and arm length partially due to growing shoulders. I have a 17.5/35 on order

Recommendations: Short-sleeve collared button down?
Looking for an alternative to my regular performance polos. Too hot for long sleeves. What company/style do you recommend for solid-color durable short-sleeve, collared button-down for trapezoid body shape? Thanks

@Darren Poesel I intended the slightest bit of satin. I really like the metallic look without being too shiny. It allows a darker color to stand out against the midnight blue wool.

@Michael McDonnell Fair. This is one of my budget dress shirts and i had to use a collar extender on it. (For some reason my neck has been growing) The Jacket is actually a little long in the sleeve, but this was the nature of the cut I had to get (M2M) to fit in the shoulders. It was altered as much as possible but this is the best they could do. I'm planning to get into pocket squares when I have more closet space. I'm currently VERY tight right now.
Brand recommendations?
So I work out a lot and lost almost 60lbs since last November. Surgery and health with a sprinkle of depression hit hard and did what it does. So going from a XXXL to somewhere at an XL (Ralph Lauren XL, but Lacoste XXL for example because of design weirdness) I’ve had to do some wardrobe refreshing. I don’t care if I’m fluffy, I’m still gonna be stylish. As someone with larger arms and chest/back and still some remaining fluff in the midsection, I find buying good clean stylish shirts especially difficult. Either they end up being huge if we go by neck size two where I’m swimming in the shirts, or they’re tight if I try measurements like chest/arm/waist. I’d love some good recommendations from the community. I have a goal, and that’s to fit into my Marine Corps Dress Blues again.

I assume you're referring to dress shirts (or similar style). If this is the case, get one that fits the shoulders/chest. Everything else is easier to alter. If you are currently more pear-shaped, you may need looser fitting or stretchy fabrics (think cotton polo etc) for now. Diet and do some resistance training until your abdomen circumference is close to your chest circumference, then you can look into getting nicer shirts fitted. From there, it will be a matter of altering the waist to match your physique progress.
