Cortisol is a stress hormone and it has one job. It tells your body to prepare to fight or run. To do that effectively, it redirects resources. Blood goes to your muscles. Your heart rate increases. Non-essential functions, meaning things like digestion, cellular repair, and immune regulation, get turned down. That response was designed for short bursts. A threat appears, your body responds, the threat passes, and your body returns to a resting state where it can focus on repair and restoration. The problem is that most people navigating a serious diagnosis are locked in that activated state for weeks or months at a time. The body stays in fight or flight not because of a single moment, but because of the weight of everything. The appointments, the uncertainty, the financial pressure, the fear, the grief. All of it keeps the stress response running. And when it runs continuously, repair slows down. Inflammation rises. Minerals get stripped from the body. The same systems you need most are the ones being suppressed.
