Pick something you have already read or watched in another language. Something you would not mind going through again. You end up understanding far more than your vocabulary should allow, because you already remember the story. The context does the work your word count cannot do yet. The other half of it is that you have to stop looking things up. If you pause on every word you do not know, you kill the enjoyment, and you block the thing that is actually teaching you, which is picking the meaning up from what is around it.

Ukrainian has this thing where the word for with changes the endings of the words that come after it. Those endings have been one of the hardest things for me to nail down in my AI sessions, and I still get corrected on them. But the corrections are coming less often, and some of the endings are starting to feel easier. Here's the part I actually care about. I don't know the rule behind it. I haven't looked it up, and I don't plan to. If I see it enough times, the pattern settles in on its own. That's the whole bet, and watching the corrections drop off without ever opening a grammar book is what keeps me going.

Yesterday's session went well, and the thing I noticed wasn't a new word. It was the speed. Answering in Ukrainian is getting quicker. Less assembling the sentence in my head before I write it. There's more vocabulary sitting there ready than there was, and the same thing is showing up in the reading. One honest caveat. I'm at about forty minutes a day right now between the lessons and the reading. I would not recommend that. It's more than the method asks for and more than most people can hold. It's helping me. It's just not the version I'd tell you to copy.

The week so far, in twenty-minute blocks. Four tutor lessons, one every day. Two days of reading. One day of watching content. Nothing else. Here's the honest part. By my own method that split is backwards. The content is supposed to be the core and the tutor is supposed to be the optional thing you add on top. But the tutor sessions are new, and right now they're clicking better than the reading and the watching, which I know will click eventually. So I'm leaning into the thing that's working instead of the thing that's ideal, and I'm doing it knowingly. I'm fine with that, because the split isn't what decides whether this works. The habit is. Twenty minutes of Ukrainian has happened every single day this week without me forcing it. A wrong split can be corrected later. A missing habit is the thing that actually kills a language. A few chapters into the manga now, and the reading is not one experience. It's two. Some pages I pick up almost everything, and I'm even learning new words purely from context, because the rest of the page gives me enough that the unknown word just falls into place. Then the next page has too many words I don't know, and nothing lands at all. It is getting better than it was at the beginning. But here's what nobody tells you about this phase. The hard part isn't the vocabulary. It's the effort of blocking out what you don't know and staying focused on what you do know. That's a skill on its own, it costs real energy every session, and it's exactly the skill this phase is training. If you're in the content stage and your pages feel wildly uneven, that's not a sign it's failing. That's what it looks like.
