A few chapters into the manga now, and the reading is not one experience. It's two. Some pages I pick up almost everything, and I'm even learning new words purely from context, because the rest of the page gives me enough that the unknown word just falls into place. Then the next page has too many words I don't know, and nothing lands at all. It is getting better than it was at the beginning. But here's what nobody tells you about this phase. The hard part isn't the vocabulary. It's the effort of blocking out what you don't know and staying focused on what you do know. That's a skill on its own, it costs real energy every session, and it's exactly the skill this phase is training. If you're in the content stage and your pages feel wildly uneven, that's not a sign it's failing. That's what it looks like.
