There are no Ukrainian Pokémon cards. If there were, I'd be learning from them, because it doesn't matter much what language the card is in. What matters is that I care about what's on it. That's the part worth copying. Pick the thing you'd be doing anyway, get the words for it, then go and use them. If it was football, I'd use the app or make my own flashcards for the football words, and then start watching and reading about it in the language. So what would you learn a language through? Most of my Ukrainian this week did not happen at a desk. A short session with the app before the gym. A manga chapter on my phone between sets. Another session on the walk home. Each one was small. Together they were more than I would have done if I had waited for a proper block of time. I think a lot of people stop because they are waiting for that block. An hour, a quiet room, a clear head. It does not come often enough. So where does your studying actually happen. Not where you think it should. Where it really does.

There is one Pokémon I care about more than the rest. Quilava. Not a popular one, and the cards are not worth much. I collect every one I can find, in any language. That sounds like a side hobby. It is actually doing a lot of the work. Almost every language has Pokémon in it somewhere, which means I always have a reason to open Ukrainian that has nothing to do with studying. I think most people who stick with a language have one of these. Something specific enough that it pulls you back in on the days nothing else would. So what is yours. The thing niche enough that you would open a language just for it.

I took a test last weekend to find out where I actually am in Ukrainian. Cold, no prep, no second attempt. It gave me a number. I do not trust the number. It is multiple choice. On a three-option question you get roughly one in three right by guessing, so some of what came back is luck rather than knowledge. The honest way to read it is as a ceiling on what I know, not a measurement of it. That is not a complaint about the test. It is worth knowing about any way you check yourself. A number that includes your guesses is still useful. It just tells you the most you might know, not the least. So what do you use to check where you are. And when it gives you a good answer, do you know how much of it you actually earned.

I have tried building a vocabulary habit with flashcards three times. Twice it fell apart, and both times the reason was the same. I had too many words in a day. What I got wrong was thinking the daily count was the number that mattered. It is not. The number that matters is the ceiling. How big can the pile get on a day I do not show up. Set a cap and the maths changes completely. Miss a day, and the next morning there is one normal session waiting. Nothing extra. Nothing to catch up on. That is the difference between a habit that survives a bad week and one that does not. Not discipline. Not motivation. A ceiling low enough that missing a day costs you nothing.
