I’d start with hiragana first, but not in isolation. Learn it alongside a few basic phrases so you can immediately connect the characters with real sounds and situations. Once hiragana feels comfortable, add katakana, then start building basic grammar and vocabulary. I wouldn’t rush into kanji too early, learning a small number in context is much easier than memorizing long lists. A little listening and speaking from the beginning also helps a lot. Even 10–15 minutes a day of shadowing simple Japanese can make pronunciation and sentence rhythm feel much more natural.
Trying to Make My Japanese Feel More Natural
Hi everyone, I'm Fiona. I'm here to meet others who are interested in Japanese, so we can discuss and learn the language together more effectively. I travel to Japan fairly often, and one thing I’ve noticed is that knowing vocabulary and actually having a natural conversation are two very different things. I can usually understand the general meaning, but I still catch myself translating in my head before I speak. My goal now is less about “studying Japanese” and more about becoming comfortable enough to respond naturally in everyday situations. I’d love to hear from people who’ve made that jump. What helped you most — speaking practice, shadowing, listening, or just spending more time with native speakers?
