I’ve been following the fight over mail-in voting, and I think the bigger issue is actually about power, not just ballots. The federal government argues that tighter USPS rules could improve election security and consistency. On the other hand, states and voting-rights groups argue that election administration has traditionally belonged largely to the states, and that changing mail-ballot rules this close to an election risks rejecting legitimate votes. That leaves a bigger question: If every state runs elections differently, how much federal oversight is too much? And if you believe election integrity matters, where should the line be drawn between preventing fraud and making voting unnecessarily difficult? I can see arguments on both sides, which is why I think this is more interesting than the usual partisan shouting. If federal elections affect the whole country, why should 50 states have 50 different rulebooks?
