What's your honest opinion on memorising word lists?
Does it actually help you speak, or does it just feel productive? I'll go first with mine in the comments — genuinely curious how differently people see this.

Okay, my take: memorising word lists feels productive, but it mostly builds recognition, not the ability to actually speak. You can memorise 100 words and still freeze when you need one in real time — because knowing a word and being able to pull it out mid-sentence are two completely different skills. What actually moves the needle is using new words in sentences about things you'd really talk about — your day, your opinions, your job. It's slower and it's less comfortable (you risk getting it wrong), but that's what builds the ability to actually speak English like a tool, not a school subject. Curious if anyone's tried shifting from lists to sentences and noticed a difference.

@Richard Anselmo Same. To me, it's like training for a marathon by watching videos of people running, it gives you a sense of achievement but you're not accomplishing anything 😅

Hi all!
Hey everyone, glad to have found this group. Quick intro: I'm Feds, currently wrestling with Mandarin Chinese tones (they humble me daily), and trying to keep my French and Spanish from rusting away in the background. I'm here mainly for the support and inspiration — multi-language learning can get lonely, and I'd love to see how others stay motivated, especially when juggling more than one language at a time. For context, I also happen to coach international professionals on the mindset and confidence side of speaking a foreign language for work — so this community is a nice mix of personal practice and professional curiosity for me.
