Feedback from a newbie
Hi Mike, I need HELP! You have put masses of work into this initiative, and I am sure it is still evolving, but I am finding it hard to find my way around! There does not appear to be a classroom tab? The tab 'Course 1' covers assignments clearly. But how do the phases and steps fit in? Ditto the photopoetry. Are we to post images to those too? Or are they concepts for us to think about.? Also, because the course seems to have dates for everything...mostly January, i initially had been trying to catch up...but it is now mid-March so am not sure where we are at in Course 1. I am finding lots of interesting snippets to think about, but I am experiencing a bit of overwhelm. I think I need to stop posting for now and just follow whats going on for a while until I understand how it all hangs together better. Thank you for all your attentive comments on my work so far. I hope you are getting some assistance.... it looks like a huge project you have taken on. It is both brave and exciting, and I want to understand how to participate better. Kind regards.
Seeing with Intent - Assignment 5 - Image Submissions
Assignment 5 Photo Challenge — The Necessary Image Create one photograph that communicates a single, clear idea or feeling using subtraction as your primary tool. Assignment Prompt: Photograph a subject you might normally shoot wide or inclusively, then deliberately remove anything that does not serve its meaning. Your goal is clarity through restraint. Be sure that your new post is posted to the last comment in this thread. There often is a button that says "Jump to last comment." You don't want your image to appear as a comment under someone else's image.

I did not feel the need to remove much to achieve the goal. My friend who is a careful and intense photographer was just beautifully silhouetted by the evening light. A simple composition that I took full advantage of because my friend stood quietly for ages and I wanted to get down low among the grass reeds, below the eye of the sun. I didnt quite succeed, so in the 2nd shot I removed the last remnant of sun, and smoothed out a distracting edge gap on the left, using Light Room.

Color, tone & mood. Comment on this to post images you have created for the Seeing with Intent Assignment 4: Light as Meaning. Intent: Color becomes expressive, not decorative. It's one more element that helps to tell the story.

I find colour takes on a particularly important expressive role in blur photography, or ICM (Intentional Camera Movement). This image was taken at the Senso-ji temple in Asakusa, Tokyo. Thousands of people pass through the soaring gates of thunder in Japan's largest temple every day. By using ICM I tried to capture the emotion that the red colour of the gates brings to the scene as the crowds scurry on through. The red isn't just a statement. It creates a sense of awe...or at least thats how I saw it. Without the colour and toning, the meaning of this image would be lost.

@Mike Thompson Thanks so much for the feedback Mike. These assignments are forcing me to think about why i took a photo a particular way. I have been shooting with intent for a while now but never had to articulate exactly why I executed them the way I did. Cheers.

The Quiet Storefront. What Is The Image Saying? Comment on this to post images you have created for the Seeing with Intent Assignment 1: What Is Your Image Saying? The Quiet Storefront is a suggestion. Any other subject that says something to you is acceptable.

@Carina Gustavsson I like the way you achieved a balance between the elements here. The objects may be placed asymmetrically, but their visual weight distribution provides symmetry, thereby reducing tension and meeting the brief of 'quiet'

Is there a limit to what one can say in a comment? I wrote more on what why and how I proceed the image. :)

I grew up in the UK then moved to New Zealand 50 years ago. The light is so strong here. This is part of the story that I try to factor into my work.
