🌲#1.4 Scots Pine Trees
These majestic trees once covered large parts of the Scottish Highlands. I saw quite a dense clump of them today. Can you see how they are reaching for the sunlight? What do you notice about the tree trunks?

I notice that the trees are growing tall and reaching towards the sunlight. Their trunks are long and straight, and they seem to grow closely together.

Yes, it’s fascinating! It reminds me of the dense forests around Jerash, Jordan. The trees grow close together and reach up toward the sunlight We can see trees from Dibeen Forest behind the sign.
🏠Explorer's Log #1.4 The land where you Live
Every place has its own character, history, and limits. Living lightly on the land does not look the same everywhere. Climate, soil, water, culture, and access all shape what is possible and appropriate. Comparison with other places or people is rarely helpful. You may live on a croft, in a town, in rented accommodation, or without easy access to green space. All of these contexts still involve relationship with land. Noticing where you are — rather than where you think you “should” be — is an important first step. 💭 Pause & Reflect What do you know about the place where you live? What feels familiar, and what remains unknown? 👣 Your Next Step Learn one small fact about your local area — a native plant, a seasonal pattern, or the source of your water. 📷 If you'd like to, share a photo, a picture or tell us what you discovered. We'd love to explore your landscape with you.

That’s beautiful, Cath! Five generations caring for the same land is very special.
🌿#1.6 Caring for the Land — Giving Something Back
The land gives us a lot. Food to eat, water to drink, places to play and explore, materials we use, and homes for plants, animals and people. So what can we give back? There’s a word for this: reciprocity. It simply means that a relationship goes both ways. Caring for the land doesn't have to mean doing something enormous. Small actions matter too. You might grow some flowers for insects, look after a garden, pick up litter, waste less, support someone growing food locally, or simply learn more about the plants and animals that share your neighbourhood. Sometimes caring also means doing nothing. Before we change something, we can stop and ask whether it actually needs our help. 🔎 Explorer’s Log Think of a place you know — your garden, street, park, beach, woodland, farm or somewhere else. 🌿What does this place give to you? And then turn the question around: What could you give back? 👣It could be something you do, something you stop doing, or simply something you notice and understand better. 📷 Optional: Show us a place you care about and tell us one small way you could care for it.

Dibeen Forest Reserve, Jerash, Jordan This place gives me peace, fresh air and a connection with nature. I can give back by keeping it clean, protecting its trees and caring for the wildlife.
🚢 #1.4 The town where I live...
is called Oban. It is on the coast and a ferry port for travelling to and from the islands. Sometimes wr get some very interesting ships visiting. This was a Spanish vessel called El Galeon Andaluz

I chose plants and wildlife because I love nature and I’m interested in learning more about the plants and animals around us.
