Revenge Bedtime Procrastination: Why you’re exhausted but still up at 1am
I want to talk about something many in this community has mentioned to me at some point: being completely wiped out by 9pm and somehow still scrolling at 1am for no real reason. I asked a bunch of people directly what’s actually behind this, and the answers were more consistent than I expected. Nobody said “I just like my phone.” What kept coming up instead was some version of: this is the only hour of the day that’s actually mine. That tracks with the research too. Turns out this isn’t really about willpower or bad habits. It’s usually one of two things: either your day left you with zero unclaimed time so your body is refusing to give up the only window it has left, or your actual chronotype just doesn’t match the schedule you’re trying to force yourself into. Sometimes it’s both at once. I wrote a full breakdown of what’s driving it, what the research actually says, and what helps depending on which pattern you’re in. Worth a read if you’ve ever wondered why “just go to bed earlier” never works for you. Read it here → https://open.substack.com/pub/restfulsleep/p/revenge-bedtime-procrastination Curious which version of this is more you: are you reclaiming time you feel like the day stole, or are you more of a genuine night owl fighting a schedule that doesn’t fit you?

I used to be a night owl, but think these days I enjoy the quiet time just for me.
