Welcome to Week 40 of the 2025 Breath Hold Challenge! Missed last week? Here are some insights from Week 39: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 - Many beginners (like @Marleen Veda) improved by 10–30 seconds in just a day or two. - Even short, repeated holds (1:05, 1:12) are valuable — consistency builds capacity 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 - Distraction, meditation, or focus techniques help extend holds. - Staying relaxed is often more important than “pushing.” 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 - One solid dive with intent can be as powerful as many shorter ones. - Repeating the same time (like @Gary Frame ’s legendary 1:05) is its own discipline. 👋 New here? Here is how it works: Step 1: Take an inhale, start your stopwatch & hold your breath. Step 2: Post your time here, get feedback and points Step 3: Head on over to the Classroom & follow the instructions Let's go & double your breath hold! 🧑‍🏫

@Dan Hedlund Hey dude, welcome to this wonderful adventure toward greater self-knowledge. Breathe marks the beginning and end of our lives. Enjoy your journey ! In my case, to do this exercise, I have never used a towel on my face. I think it's inappropriate for me. Instead, I use a plastic bowl that I put in the freezer for a while. For the exercise, I prepare everything I need: place the bowl on a chair, sit on the floor, record my vital signs with an oximeter—easy to find in pharmacies, for example 10 warrior breaths + 3 snake breaths Start the timer and calmly go for a dive with a smile on my face. When I can't continue, I stop the timer and check the oximeter again. Finally, I compare the two. For example, if you had a heart rate of 60 beats per minute before the dive and you end up with more or less 50 during the dive, you have just experienced the mammalian dive reflex. It would be easier to have someone with you. Otherwise, as I do when I'm alone, I film myself so I can see the changes in the oximeter afterwards. And above all, don't push yourself too hard. Be patient my friend and try, again and again.

@Dan Hedlund Full lung hold and empty lung hold, as their names suggest, are opposites. What you are experiencing is completely normal. When you hold your breath after an inhale, your lungs fill with air and the pressure increases. It should be noted that the walls of the lungs and the carotid artery contain baroreceptors that react to changes in pressure. These in turn stimulate the brain, which explains the increase in heart rate. A few moments later, it stabilizes and you can hold your breath for a long time. When you hold your breath after an exhale, there is no pressure on the lungs. You feel calm and imagine that you are a dolphin in the sea 😇. No, the reminder comes as soon as the CO2 level rises. We tend to hold our breath for less time when our lungs are empty.

@Manuel Ruep That's great, it reminds me of my childhood. We had a big tortoise, but since it died, we haven't had another one.
