Nervous When You Can't Touch The Bottom...Do This
Caribe Nation, A community member asked a really important question: “How do I reset in the middle of a lap when the pool gets deep and I can’t touch?” First — if you freak out the moment you can’t stand up, that’s not random. It means you’re swimming into a spot you’re not fully ready for yet. So here’s what to do. Step by step. Step 1: Stop introducing panic If the deep part keeps triggering you, don’t keep “testing it” every lap. That just trains your nervous system to expect fear. For now, do your main practice in the shallow end where you can stand up anytime. Step 2: Learn your “Reset Button” (this is the whole game) Your reset button is simple: Roll to your back → float → breathe → relax → roll to front → keep swimming. Before you try the deep part again, you need to be able to do this on command in the shallow end. Not once. Not “sometimes. ”Every time. Step 3: Drill the reset button 10 times (in shallow water) Here’s the drill: 1. Push off the wall and swim 3–5 strokes 2. Stop 3. Roll to your back 4. Float for 5–10 seconds 5. Take 3 calm breaths 6. Stand up or roll back to your front to continue swimming 7. Repeat Do 10 rounds. If you can’t stay calm during the float, that’s your sign you’re not ready to remove the ability to stand. Step 4: Build your “I can finish” engine (shallow end) Now we build confidence the right way: Swim easy lengths in the shallow end until you can do: 10 lengths (25m each) without panic and without needing a mental pep talk. You should finish feeling like: “I could do 2 more.” That’s the standard. Step 5: Re-introduce the deep part the smart way Now — and only now — we start using the deep part again. Do this: 1. Start in the shallow end 2. Swim toward the deep part 3. BEFORE you get nervous, hit your reset button (roll to back, float, breathe) 4. Then continue swimming back toward shallow 5. Repeat Your goal is to teach your brain: “Even when I can’t stand, I’m still fine.” Step 6: Rule that keeps you safe
